Remember that would-be “Waller Landing” in Hebron? Now you can own it!

While Salisbury officials (Barrie, Dunn and Comegys) and an out-of-town owner were scamming City residents to do a special financing deal to develop the old mall site across Glen Avenue from the Civic Center, the Town of Hebron and another developer from elsewhere were trying to hoodwink its residents to support a huge multi-use project on the farm at the intersection of Route 50 and Porter Mill Road. Like the old Mall scam, local residents also challenged that project, which is now “belly-up.” For a brief history of that saga see --

Posted with this comment is the ad for the foreclosure sale of the property that will be held in a couple weeks. If you go, be warned that the project still faces major planning & zoning and other hurdles too numerous and complex to discuss here. In the past we have also posted pictures about the project, including these. Can you identify the “man with the plan” in one of the photos?

This looks like one to steer clear of.I never understood why residents had an issue with the old mall property being developed.When the mall was demolished I thought the locals would be happy to see something positive go there.

Thanks again to the Dirty Dozen for petitioning the court for an administrative determination about the Old Mall development plan. The zoning was bad on it and it would have been one of those "better to ask forgiveness than permission" if Barrie and her minions had sneaked it by the people and the almost 800 units been built. The judge ruled that "you have to do what you say you're going to do", calling the city attorney and the developer out, putting the end to a scheme that would have cost the city taxpayers over $14 million in tax giveaways and free city services for 20 years for the whole development, which would have housed something like 2200 people.

Joe,how can this property be sold because a farmer just leased it for 10 years and this is his first year.He has invested thousands into an irrigation system.If somone buys this property,does this means they can't do anything for ten years or is the farmer screwed.Maybe one of the Save the Bay or Nanticoke Water alliance can buy it.They love screwing farmers with taxpayer bucks.

I wish someone would figure out what can be done with the "old mall", other than low cost housing (enough problems across the street on Emory Ct.). They could at least tell people to go ahead & take whatever gravel & such they need for things like dry wells.
