Dover Bridge Stuck Open For 2 Hours

TANYARD — After being stuck in the open position for about 2 hours and 15 minutes on Wednesday, June 18, crews got Dover Bridge to close and opened the bridge to vehicle traffic at about 5:45 p.m.

Firefighters from Preston and Easton volunteer fire companies were called to the bridge and sprayed water on the bridge’s metal frame as temperatures Tuesday reached into the upper 90s.

Fire crews sprayed the water to cool off the metal.

Traffic backed up for miles in Caroline and Talbot counties as Maryland State Highway Administration crews rerouted traffic through Denton and Cambridge.

“Once again, the Dover Bridge being opened on a hot summer afternoon has caused the bridge to become stuck in the open position,” state Sen. Richard Colburn, R-37-Mid-Shore, said. “This only serves to magnify the fact that should EMT or police personnel from the Caroline County side of the bridge need to get to the hospital located in downtown Easton, a 20-mile detour through Dorchester County would prevent them from reaching the hospital in a timely manner.”

We have been trying to get this bridge replaced since Shaffer was in office or over thirty years. Maybe we need new representation or have a new state Senator who can get this done. Colburn doesn't seem to be effective.

Some engineer screwed up big time if he didn't allow enough room for expansion.Somebody has to pay for that crap and it shouldn't be the tax payers, unless it was a state engineer that designed that bridge, then he should be fired and his license revoked. That is a stupid mistake.

This bridge was built in 1932, I think the engineer is dead.

New Bridge is in the works, drawings are completed with one hang-up,that being a gas line that runs under the water parallel with the bridge, this issue should be resolved shortly. Regarding Scott's response: Colburn has worked tirelessly for replacement of this bridge, but has met with opposition. Our current governor and his cronies don't think this is a priority!
