Dagsboro, DE – Troopers are investigating an incident where a logging truck struck some power lines and caused utility poles to fall to the ground.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:50 a.m. today when troopers responded to the area of DuPont Boulevard (US113) and 9 Foot Road (SR26) for a report of wires across both northbound and southbound lanes of the road. The investigation revealed that a 1998 Mack Truck with a trailer full of logs being operated by Sherwood Cottman, 52 of Eden, MD, was traveling southbound on US113. As the truck approached the area of 9 Foot Road, one of the logs seated above the tongs of the trailer caught some wires and began pulling poles down. The truck was able to come to a stop on the southbound shoulder but not before one of the logs became dislodged from the trailer and three utility poles were pulled over.
Sherwood Cottman was not injured in the incident and was cited for an Oversize Load.
Northbound and southbound lanes of US113 between 9 Food Road and Swamp Road were closed for a period of time while utility crews worked to clear the wires and poles. One lane of northbound US113 was closed for approximately six hours while utility and phone crews worked to restore the electrical and telephone equipment.
