Cable boxes let TV viewers around the country tune in to their favorite programs, but the appliances are sucking energy more than most household items in the process.
A cable box with a digital recorder can consume as much as 35 watts of power, costing about $8 a month, according to The Los Angeles Times. Cable boxes are the second biggest energy drainer in many homes -- falling behind air conditioning.
The nation's 224 million cable boxes combined consume as much electricity as four nuclear reactors running around the clock, the LA Times reports.

Hillary would say "watt difference does it make".
It also drains my wallet BIG TIME!!!
Cut the cable and save on DP&ouch!
I just got a $100 electric bill. Now I know where $8 of it came from.
what difference will 8 bucks be on my over 1000 dollar bill from d,p & screw everybody w/o a dig meter.
The greater impact of the cable bills takes more money...you can turn this box off when you're not home and save the $8 per month...or cut the cable completely and save $150 per month!
I remember when cable was touted as being commercial-free since you were paying money to the cable company...now there's as much time spent showing commercials as there is actual show content - and the rates have skyrocketed!
Another good reason to cut the cable altogether.
Those of you with kids - no matter how financially struggling your kids are after they leave home, they'll probably have cable tv, just because they got used to having it at home. And their babies will do the same thing. Wean them as soon as you can.
It must use all of that power for the microphone and camera inside.
They just encrypted the Cable in Salisbury. Sunday we only got two channels both from Comcast. One telling how they were screwing us out of local Stations they are supposed to rebroadcast. They suggested this box that downgrades the signal to 320P or less. A complete piece of junk.
I complained to the FCC. Basic Cable is supposed to supply Local Programming to the TV directly.
I canceled the TV completely. Thankfully they did that.
They also lied to me several months saying they no longer offer Economy Internet. I changed to that. Overall saving $30/month.
Stinks to have to use an antenna to get TV that by law they are supposed to supply. Fewer channels as well. Can not believe they are able to dumb down the signal and get away with it. ObamaTV I guess.
