Troopers Investigating Deadly Pit Bull Attack

Felton, DE - The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a deadly pit bull attack that tragically killed a 4-year-old boy.

The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon as a 4-year-old Camden boy and his 24-year-old mother were visiting with a female friend in the 900 block of Edwardsville Road, west of Felton. The mother, who is several months pregnant, and her friend were inside the residence while the 4-year-old was outside playing in the yard around her friend's three pit bulls of whom he'd been around numerous times in the past. At one point, the mother looked out the window and observed her son being attacked by the dogs. While her friend called 9-1-1, the mother immediately ran out in an attempt to save her son and was also bit numerous times on both arms. Two HVAC repairmen working at the house also attempted to save the young child by fending off the animals with PVC piping and assisting the mother from the attacking dogs.

EMS and troopers responded to the scene and began first aid on the young boy before he was soon pronounced dead. He was turned over the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner who will conduct an autopsy to rule the exact cause and manner of death.

The 24-year-old mother was transported by EMS to Kent General Hospital where she is being treated for her injuries as well as observation.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing and the three pit bull dogs were removed from the residence by the SPCA. The status of the dogs is unknown at this time.

The name of the 4-year-old victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

I'd be interested to see the demographics of these people.......I bet they are not keeping these dogs as house pets....I check the area out on Google Earth .... make sure you check that backyard out.....

Why put the dogs breed out there? Any dog can become aggressive if provoked. Who leaves their 4 year old child alone outside?

You people keep protecting Pit Bulls and Rottweiler'. These breeds of dogs do not belong in the hands of certain people. People that want to own and raise these types of dogs should have background checks, and cleared. These are not Jack Russels or Terrier'. You would not let just anyone own a panther or a Cheetah!! Limit the people that have these dogs!

Now watch what Kent General Hospital will be billing her for the observation time after KGH discharges her.

Not being heartless. I pray for the Mother. The reality is that dogs, any dog, respond to cues in their environment. My heart goes out to the Mother. I cannot imagine losing any of my kids. She will remain in my prayers

Pit bulls will eventually be banned. They are good most of the time but then the aren't they can kill you and are almost unstoppable. In the end it will be insurance companies that will force this scenario.

really what does race or "demographic" have to do with the dog breed or that a child has died. You heartless jerk!! Show some compassion!!!

And to the monitor you are a jerk for allowing that comment to be posted

As a dog lover something has to be done with the pit breeds. They were originally bred as hunters for large game and no matter how much you try, it's impossible to "love" an inherent trait completely out of any dog and anyone who says differently is grossly uninformed.
Copied directly from the ASPCA site---- " Pit bulls have been bred to behave differently during a fight. They may not give warning before becoming aggressive, and they’re less likely to back down when clashing with an opponent. When provoked, they may become aggressive more readily than another breed might. Sometimes they don’t inhibit their bites, so they may cause injury more often than other dogs."

I cried when I read this.

God rest the soul of this poor child and comfort this grieving pregnant mother.

I cannot imagine the horror and the pain.

I have no sympathy for the mother at all. No mother worth a damm allows a child in a yard with 3 pit bulls. The worst part is the irresponsible freak is going to have another one, she obviously isn't capable of taking care of properly.
Everyone needs to stop coddling and sympathizing with her type. When a child is involved there is NO room for political correctness nor should there be. These types will never learn and children will continue to die and be maimed for life until people start putting these so called "mothers" in their place and telling them like it is!

Pit bulls need to be banned from America ! They are bread for killing and fighting, it is in their DNA, so it is like taking a serial killer or a child molester and having him babysit your children. Not a good idea!

I have several pits and they are friendly, very intelligent and a loving breed. It's when people raise them to kill or be mean that I think people are confusing with all pits.

Other news reports indicate that the dogs were owned by a family friend, that the mom and child were visiting. Who puts a child out in the yard with 3 (or is it 4) pit bulls? None had current vaccinations. None were spayed or neutered. Don't give me your crap about pitbulls being loving animals. BS. I own an aggressive breed (not a bully breed) and I would never leave my dog unattended with strangers or children. And as a parent, I would never leave my child unattended with someone else's dogs - pitbulls or not. And don't discredit the little dogs. Chihauhaus and terriers bite plenty, but are typically less fatal due to size and strength. What a terrible way for a child to die.

No child should be left alone, unsupervised, with ANY animal. Not even with a lab, golden retriever, or other "friendly" dog breed.

The mother has paid the price for her lack of judgment.

But Pit Bulls are such loving dogs!!
