France Definitively Bans Genetically Modified Corn

France definitively banned the growing of genetically modified corn on Monday after its highest court and Senate both confirmed an existing ban.

A grouping of leftist senators including members of the ruling Socialists, Greens and Communists approved a law banning MON810, a type of GM corn produced by US firm Monsanto, that had already been passed by the lower house of parliament, overcoming opposition from right-wing members.

At the same time, the Council of State rejected a request from corn producers to overturn the ban on MON810.

The council said the applicants from the General Association of Corn Producers (AGPM) had failed to make the case that they faced an urgent economic crisis as a result of the ban, pointing to the fact that only a small portion of French corn is grown with GM seeds.

With Paris having twice put temporary bans on GM crops -- in 2011 and 2013 -- AGPM said Monday's verdicts were "not a surprise".

So, they grow their own corn and we keep ours over here for our use. Problem? solved.

6:53 enjoy your gene altered chemically induced corn. moron.

It is so genetically modified for fuel it is not even edible corn anymore. Sad to see how stupid some commenters are.

What most people call food anymore is crap. Human bodies weren't made to eat over processed, chemical laced, genetically modified "food." It is why we have so many diseases we have today including through the roof cancer rates that were unheard of a 100 years ago. When you start putting all the chemicals in the human body it throws everything out of whack. We really are what we eat.

8:00 am. Funny that you like to call others stupid when you yourself are so wrong. GM corn is certainly for food and modified for disease resistance and higher yields. You eat GM corn everyday without even knowing it. That will change however as eventually GMO implicated materials will have to be identified on food ingredient labels.

dittos 8:42 France isn't the only country that is wisely rejecting GMO food. They know the damage it is doing to the human body.

If we continue to speak up, maybe this country will finally do the same. Seems we're always last understanding the issues of the day.

Actually, France only banned one type of GMO corn. France imports a lot of GMO grains. Only one country has a total ban and that is only for a short time.
Fact: there has not been even one documented case of any GMO causing an illness.
Fact: cancer rates are actually trending down.
Why do people hate science so much?

11:43 I would encourage you to do more research. Monsanto has infiltrated the FDA. There are several documented studies on The effects of GMO on second and third generation animals. And if you think cancer is trending down? Take a visit to the cancer center at PRMC on a Monday.

12:30, I believe in real numbers and real facts. There are several thousand independent studies that highlight that fact.
There are no credible studies that show harm to people or animals. Dairymen have been feeding GMO to there cows for over 20 years now.
Basically all the major scientific bodies on the planet have endorsed biotech food.
I would encourage you to choose facts over emotionalism.

12:44 I would encourage you to not be such a Know It All and learn how it works in the Real World before speaking. It would work to your benefit. There are multiple studies regarding everything and anything that becomes controversial. Industry funded studies favor the industry, and if not, the study never sees the light of day.
For every product/substance/chemical/
medicine, etc., that's been banned, evidence is introduced regarding studies that weren't previously released to the public because they showed harmful/dangerous results. Other evidence is produced that show the favorable studies included skewed data, confirmation bias and motivated reasoning behind the conclusions.
We most often hear about this in the automotive field but it happens in every field.

1:58, Yes, I do know a lot about this subject. I care very deeply about what I feed my family.
Maybe you didn't comprehend what I wrote previously.
1. There have been a couple thousand INDEPENDENT, not industry nor government funded studies that have concluded that biotech foods are safe.
2. EVERY credible scientific body in the world has concluded that biotech foods are safe.
3. Biotech has been studied for over 30 years now.
4. Biotech foods have been consumed by human and animals for 20 years with NO credible claims of illness or problems.
5. Only one country has a complete ban on biotech and that is only for 10 years. All other countries either cultivate, import and consume biotech products.
Examples, Germany has a ban on cultivating GMO maize, France bans cultivating one type of GMO corn. Some countries have their own biotech industries that they are protecting. I could list many more examples.
6. Farmers overwhelming support biotech. Go ask a farmer why.
7. GMO products have been used to manufacture medicines such as insulin for years.
I find it a crying shame when weak minded emotional people fear things that they don't understand and then seek to ban or limit good technologies.

7:33-Google "Do Seed Companies Control GM Crop Research?"
and read this article from the
Scientific American. You many change your mind when you know the truth behind the "studies" you speak of.

8:18, I had a notion that article would be referrenced, right again.
Research does not consist of simply using Google and believing the first article that pops up, have to go much deeper than that. That article has been out for about 5 years and the writers took great liberties, in other words it is false.
Go ask a farmer if you can read their contract they sign to purchase biotech seeds. You might learn something.
Every company including seed companies do not want their products that they spent millions on to be stolen. In the past year or so the Chinese were busted trying to steal biotech technology.
You can test seeds if you want but you would have to sign a legal agreement with various stipulations to protect the technology from theft. None of those agreements control the outcome from being released.
Let's look at an example.
Remember the famous "GMO causes tumors in rats" study done by Seralini? How did Seralini acquire the seeds to be tested. His team signed an agreement to receive them. The study showed that GMO corn caused massive tumors in rats. The study was published so obviously the seed companies did not control the outcome.
Now that study was retracted when it was found out that Seralini was funded by an anti science group and he used rats that develop tumors eating organic corn also.
If that study was correct every farm would not have a rat problem anymore.
Do you want to address any other points I made?

7:33 there were several independent studies stating cigarettes had no adverse health effects for decades! Wake up buddy, the world is not as it seems!

thank you 10:09 PM

and 10:30 AM, no I do not eat GMO corn every day, I do not eat corn, but I can see what eating that and the other bevy of processed food has it has done to your brain.

Yep, not one response or rebuttal to the facts listed above, just more weak minded emotionalism.
I have always wondered, why do people love emotionalism and conspiracy theories over facts and science?

I wonder how much you get paid to be a shill for Monsanto

Because 12:03 science has been proven wrong time and time again. Haven't they? Anyone who believes a thing out of a company like Monsanto's mouth is a first class fool. Profits take presentence, when and until something becomes too big to ignore. We've seen this time and time again.
9:15-You DO need to wake up and learn how it works in the Real World. I had to laugh when you brought up the contracts. I know all about them and have forgotten more than you will ever know about them. They are one sided and favor a company. Up until several years ago, the contacts were confidential. Even a lawyer wasn't allowed to review them.
The study you mentioned was done in France whose government has no restrictions unlike in the US where federal laws can and do prohibit release without permission ( a loose form of intellectual property law.)
If something is labeled as organic it doesn't mean it's GMO free, this due to the USDA's bastardizing and watering down of the definition of organic by the urging of Big Agribusiness.
The study is also back in the news. One point is Seralini was criticized for was the number of rats and length of time of study. Seems Monsanto a few years before, used not only the same breed of rats, but same number and length of time for a study, in which study claimed GMO's were safe.

"None of those agreements control the outcome from being released."

WHAT? It's not an "agreement" that prohibits the outcome of the studies to be released. It's federal laws.
You are clueless.

amazing how activists like 12:44 are compelled to spew the talking points of people they don't even know.. Monsanto does not serve their own products in their own cafeterias ..Monsanto is owned by racketeering politically savvy types who actually use people like 12:44 to distort the truth when legislation comes up.

They have to spin the language of the legislation itself ..like they did with labeling laws that the puppet Obama was pressured to capitulate to..in his typical spineless style.. Monsanto cares about Monsanto just read about their products spoiling other farmers fields and how they think they are not culpable when this happens ..all because they own Judges
