U.S. To Require Rearview Cameras In New Vehicles

The Transportation Department issued a rule Monday that will require rearview technology in many new vehicles — an effort to reduce deaths and serious injuries caused by backup accidents.

The final rule issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will require new vehicles under 10,000 pounds and built beginning May 1, 2018, to meet the new rear-visibility standards. The rule includes buses and trucks; motorcycles and trailers are exempt.

The rearview cameras must give drivers a field of vision measuring at least 10 by 20 feet directly behind the vehicle.

The system must also meet other requirements, including dashboard image size, lighting conditions and display time.

300 people died from such accidents...out of how many tens of thousands on America's roads?

Just what we need , depend on a camera and not yourself.
Pretty soon we will act like robots in the socialist world.

The 1956 Buick Centurian had a back up camera which projected the image to a screen where the rear view mirror typically was.Not sure which vehicles it was mass produced in after that.

I know of persons who have had more fender benders now that they have a rear view camera....They depend on them instead of looking over your back seat...

I just bought a new Honda Pilot with this feature. I absolutely love it. It makes parking easier and really shows what is directly behind the car that you simply can't see with mirrors alone. Whether required by law or not, I'll never buy another car without this feature.

4:21. Yeah. Don't worry about the 15,000 injuries per year or the fact that 30% of the deaths were children under 5. What the heck is wrong with making something safer.

519-300 deaths out of 34,000+, better known as, a rear view camera won't fix stupid.

Why not have a manditory flagman that walks 15 feet in front of the car at all times?
5:19 If you really want to make things safer, then take cars away from the idiots that don't look behind them before they back up.

WTF is wrong with the concept of buying something if you think it will save you money? The concept that if you buy this, your insurance rates may be lower? The concept of the free market system?

Communism is creeping up one inch at a time.

Soon, you will be told what your paycheck is, and what was deducted from it for such things required, and you will be happy with the "change".

Freaking lemmings...

Next year the FAA will require rear-view cameras and backup alarms on all aircraft.

it is an ADDED safety feature. not to replace mirrors, common sense and looking.

In my opinion this is a over rated and redundant. If you can't see behind you when backing up using your 2 side view and 1 rear view mirrors you should not be licensed to drive a car.
