Worcester Board Of Ed Votes To Change School Date To Day After Labor Day

SNOW HILL — For the first time in five years, Worcester County Public Schools (WCPS) will be the only school system in Maryland to start classes after Labor Day for the 2014-2015 school year.

WCPS broke ranks with the rest of the state this week when the Board of Education voted to return to a post-Labor Day start of Sept. 2.

“I didn’t mind being the last school district in the state to go before Labor Day,” said Board of Education President Bob Rothermel, “and I don’t mind being the first school district to go after Labor Day. Maybe it will send a message.”

9:05 tuck your panties back in, I was just letting people know, and this was the top post at the time.

Personally, I would like to see school go year round. Bud since I no longer have children in our Public "Screwal" system, I refrain from the debate. However, as a believer in States Rights and the powers and representation vested in the local community, Worcester County has every right to make changes they see fit for their "community".

All Worcester County cares about is their local yocals and good ole boys making there money at their hotels and restaurants so they can keep up with their lavish lifestyles a little bit more.

You can't give a valid reason why schools would benefit from going year round. It has been tried in Delmar and it was a nightmare and cost the county more money than it saved. Another thin is that it would allow the government to control when you could take vacations with your family. That is not what this country stands for. Also it would hurt businesses that thrive during the Summer when kids are out of school whether it be school help or customers spending money. Not trying to be mean, but you obviously haven't a clue. I do respect you for admitting you don't have children in school so that gives you no say in the matter.

Wish Wicomico County would do this!

Wow 9:32 you can not be any more wrong , mist of the summer workers that work in OC are the forgein workers that you libs love so much ! Can't have your cake and eat it to ,

Many vacationing families will be happy about this, including the locals who might be vacationing elsewhere to avoid the tourists!

All of you need to go back to school and learn how to read and write again!! Really... MacDonalds??? LMAO

Wicomico County will never do this because the Dr. Fredericksen doesn't want it to happen and neither does Ron Willey the president of the BOE. If you want this changed you need to contact all of the Board members and ask them to change it.

i think this is a great decision. I wish Wicomico would do the same.

Wicomico County always started the Tues. after Labor Day back in the 70's when I was in school. Not sure when they changed or why.

Then why don't you start a petition to get it passed instead of posting an anonymous comment on a popular blog.

It changed because they had to get the 10 teachers Professional Days in the calendar. That is approximately 2 weeks of teachers vacation during the school year. Make them take their professional days during the Summer and school will end before Memorial Day and start after Labor Day.

A school building is a huge capital investment. Why use it only 180 days out of a year? A normal business uses its building at least 270 days out of a year and sometimes more.

Everybody is complaining about the capital cost of Bennett Middle School, but it will not be utilized efficiently because of this stupidity.

A total waste of time, money and effort. First of all the tourists who bring their money to the shore live in other states and are long gone with school sports starting so early. Worcester county doesn't support oc.... There aren't enough people. It's a shame to put money over school....this the same mentality that will keep the shore from ever really coming back....shame on the county for even thinking this was a good idea.... Dumb a$$e$ with no clue.....

Obviously 9:32am and 7:44pm are not familiar with the way of life in the resort area. Neighbors help neighbors and business people help business people. Back in the 70s and years earlier, schools on the Eastern Shore started the year AFTER Labor Day. Many students worked in the resort area until Labor Day and typically enjoyed a NICE bonus for working until then. This helped many with savings for college. Starting school after Labor Day is a GREAT idea!

Actually I am very familiar with the resort way of life 2014....not 1970. There are only three high schools in Worcester county... Out of the three if you have 3-500 kids of age to work with transportation to oc your lucky. Many of these kids play sports and are already in practice for them. Waiting until after Labor Day is a waste of time that is only being used as a money grab by politicians that will be a flop. Pull your head out of your 70s sand castle the world isn't the same. Only one county is doing it.... Really a dumb idea.... Go eastern shore !!!!

Schools start different times in different states and regions.

In western PA it is/was always after Labor Day; my nephews and nieces in TX go back in early/mid August.

It was after Labor Day locally until recently. Think NCLB and testing, testing, testing was a change driver in MD. Glad to see Worcester revert to after Labor Day, and agree it would not hurt Wicomico to follow suit.

Earlier commenter made goofy comment about teacher professional days; clearly clueless. Teacher friends must work on those days. Students have the day off.

Teachers did not ask for ten professional days. It was required by the board of ed many years ago if teachers were to get a negotiated raise of 2% that year. Several years without raises followed, but the ten professional days remained. Still do. 190 days for teachers is the maximum number allowed by the state. Wicomico (and one other county) also have the longest school day in the state. Cost of utilities could be cut by reducing school day by 1/2 hour.

OMG, no one commenting has a clue about how this would change the end of the year! Hilarious! If all those silly "professional days" are to be forced into the Labor-Memorial days envelope, kids with snow/ weather/fear days will be in school til the end of June!

Good Lord, give the teachers 10 professional days before the start of school, 5 during Christmas (OMG, I said the C-word!) break, and 5 during the Easter (OMG, I said the E-word!) break, and get these kids back home by Memorial Day.

OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!!
