Last Light: Final Phaseout Of Incandescent Bulbs Coming Jan. 1

It’s lights out for the light bulb.

On Jan. 1 it will become illegal to manufacture or import traditional 60-watt and 40-watt incandescent bulbs, thanks to a 2007 bill that set strict minimum efficiency standards – and effectively outlawed the ordinary bulb.

And like a politician on Election Day, Home Depot is urging consumers to buy early and often.

“Get them while you still can,” the nation’s largest bulb retailer urges on its website. “Stock up on incandescent light bulbs before they are completely discontinued.”

I for one have no problem with this! It's outdated, inefficient, wasteful technology at this point. Incandescent bulbs had a long run. It won't be long before CFL's and the like are permanently replaced by LED.

Yes polluting the land with mercury is a great idea.

Thomas Edison…what a dumbaZZ…invented the light bulb that last 100+ years to be outlawed by politicians. He held over 100 patents, how many people in congress even hold one!

Where are we suppose to discard the light bulbs once they die out???? Since we are suppose to just put them in the trash.

So, 3 way and dimmers are out?

I'm going to start an underground bulb factory!

Um, guys...incandescent bulbs don't contain mercury. Just saying!

They are fine to throw away in regular garbage, although it's recommended you wrap them in something, paper usually. But this is for the safety of the individuals separating trash at processing centers.

FYI
Like all fluorescent lamps, CFLs contain mercury, a neurotoxin especially dangerous to children and pregnant women, which complicates their disposal. In many countries, governments have established recycling schemes for CFLs and glass generally.
