Federal authorities said Wednesday they have arrested 75 people in Puerto Rico on charges of bilking the Social Security system of millions of dollars in a scam that involved doctors and a former Social Security employee who approved bogus applications for disability payments.
The Justice Department said the former Social Security employee, Samuel Torres Crespo, charged $6,000 to write the bogus applications, while the three doctors received between $150 and $500 to write medical reports justifying the disability.
The disability program was already under fire from Capitol Hill, where analysts said it is running out of money and where lawmakers said it is not doing enough to crack down on fraud.
