Free Justin Carter Now

The 19-year-old has been in prison since March for the crime of sarcasm.

When defending the liberty of unsavory characters, I usually write of my native England. Not this week, alas. In the state of Texas, a 19-year-old man named Justin Carter sits in prison, ruthlessly stripped of his freedom for making an offensive joke. After a Facebook friend with whom he played video games described him as “crazy” and “messed up in the head,” Carter replied — sarcastically, one imagines — “Oh yeah, I’m real messed up in the head, I’m going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts.” He added “lol” and “jk” for good measure. For this he was arrested by Austin police, charged with making a “terroristic threat,” and thrown into prison. He may languish there until the start of the next decade.

Not what you should say in this day in our society. Sorry, got to let this one play out. They have the written proof, unfortunately the context and lol,jk can't be figured into this process.

Then if he did his deed, people would cry "known or should have known".
Can't have it both ways.

In light of the current events, I wouldn't mind a cop going to the house to ask a few questions. But actually thinking he should do PRISON TIME? Have you lilly covered pansie asses lost your mind? PRISON!? Give yourselves a pat on the back -- you are opening the door to the much dreaded and long predicted "thought police". `"Got to let this play out?" You mean, send the kid to prison, you know, just to keep everyone in line? Maybe start hanging the tortured bodies of dozens of comedians, because I've heard THEM say a lot worse. We can go down that road. It works GREAT in North Korea, China, and Myrammar (sp?). I'm getting the feeling that most of you can't wait to inform on SOMEBODY, maybe your best friend or a relative, just to prove how "sensible" your are and how "loyal" you are to the "system". Keep cheering. Maybe you're next...

Oh, indeed they are. They are such good little citizens. Then they can sit around in their sweat stained tee shirts chugging a beer and yucking it up with their like minded friends.

They don't know what they don't know.

Or they could hang out in the national legislature, where they could watch their like minded cohorts stuffing their pockets with cash and dismantling the Constitution, sipping champagne and brandy and laughing at the people they claim to represent. And encouraging their constituency to be afraid of, and "report" on, everything that moves or makes a sound....anonymously, of course.
