Virginia Man Sentenced For Illegal Striped Bass Catch
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- A charter boat captain will spend 30 days in jail for trafficking in illegally harvested striped bass.
William W. Lowery IV also must pay $1,300 in restitution to the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration and a $5,000 fine.

Back in the mid 70's I had a little 14 foot aluminum boat with an old 35hp junker mercury that I used to take out to B-buoy in the Delaware bay and beyond (could see N.J most of the time). Many times that junker motor wouldn't start without me having to put new sparks plugs in before I could start back home. My boat would be so full of these beautiful giant trout flopping all around in the floor, over the seats, around my legs, so many that there was very little room for me. All my friends and family had fish galore for days on end and the rest I would sell to Mrs. Murray's little bait store in Ocean View for a quarter a pound. Many times I sold her over a hundred pounds. Today, you couldn't get me out in the water in that mini titanic tub with the never start metal thing on back. I also now know the pretty giant fish were rock, not trout. Great fishing by a stupid fisherman, a complete idiot by my safety standards of today. DNREC would give me a life sentence if I were to come through the Indian River Bridge like that today.
Illegal by who's standards?
So these fish in the ocean are property of NOAA?
You would think if you were hungry you would be allowed to catch your dinner.
