Royal Farms Chicken Isn't All That

For years I have heard locals rave about Royal Farms Fried Chicken. This weekend we spent a small fortune on that greasy crap and let me tell you, I was not impressed. The excuses I heard so far was that since it was so fresh when we ordered it, it's greasier than usual, whatever!

My Wife ordered potato salad to complete the meal and when she returned with the package and saw what she was getting for $ .89 each she too couldn't believe her own eyes. Are you serious? Four ounces for almost a buck!

There is no question about it. I'd rather buy a whole chicken fully cooked at Sam's Club for less than $5.00 than spend $32.00+ on greasy nasty 22 piece chicken from Royal Farms. Never again!

That's the beauty of America - you don't have to buy it! Personally, I've had it a couple of times and it was not bad. Still prefer the old English's.

Interesting article. We have recently heard from more than one source that Royal Farms has the best fried chicken, and have planned to try it at the next opportunity. Will still give it a try, but would like to hear more comments about Royal Farm fried chicken! Also how pricey is it for 8 pieces?

I guess "to each their own" I personally like Royal Farms Chicken...not as much as the Old English's chicken....But I really don't like going to the place up on North 13 (I think its Bay Family) to get it...they always act like they are doing you a favor by waiting on you....too bad they do have the best chicken.....
So what is your favorite Joe?

Royal Farms chicken is the BOMB!
You don't have to ever buy it again...more for me and others that love it!

Maybe you just got a bad batch? I love Royal Farms fried chicken and I don't like overly greasy stuff - never been a problem for me there.

For great Potato Salad go to Bishopville FD when they have their biannual chicken/ham dinner. It has a bit of green pepper in it. I usually hate any "bought" salads but Bishopville's is really good.

I buy Daytons on Snow Hill Road. It is fresh AND IT IS LOCAL.

Royal farms is good , go try that Crap KFC?

I've mostly liked RF chicken, but it isn't always at the top of my list. Some of the breast pieces are just monster in size.

You can buy all of the ingredients, including the chicken,to cook it just exactly the way you like it.

They have gone downhill. Anymore their breasts are always undercooked. Their "western fries" are not coated well anymore. Potato logs should be heavily coated in flour with BLACK PEPPER and salt (and/or seasoned salt)and fried in the same oil as the chicken. Royal farms western fries have no flavor, no spice. Never knew "western" was a synonym for "bland".

Plus just too expensive, they charge $4.29 for a single breast. So you're looking like $11 for a meal for 1 person!

I think a lot of people like grease.

First, you must have gotten a bad batch of chicken Royal Farms is the best. Second, your complaint on the side item you need to look at this way 4oz is .89 ($3.56 pint) you go to KFC a pint there $4.12 also, KFC sides are $2 (4oz) and KFC is not that great anymore

I work @ Popeyes...and a lot of times it depends on who is cooking the chicken... depends on the way its battered, cooked, & stirred.. everything depends on the cook.. there is one cook whos chicken I will not eat because it simply does not taste good.. but when the other cook is working.. its the best fried chicken ever...

11:12 Monster size means chickens pumped full of chemicals and hormones.....no thanks.

Minit market in ocean city has wonderful fried chicken.

The first thing you do when you buy anything steamed or fried is open the lid on the container. It make all the difference in the world and still is warm.

The last couple of times we've bought RF chicken it's been incredibly greasey, in a pinch I'd go back but I prefer to make my own oven fried

Anonymous said...

i still believe that RF is the best!

Anonymous said...

well thats the issue, you let the wife order!

I still can't believe none of you will leave your name and all you're doing is commenting on fried chicken!!!!

Try not to condemn RF chicken because of 1 experience. I've been eating their chicken for a couple of years and only had 1 bad experience. All other times has been very good.

you can still get englishes fried chicken at Bay Country Meals on rt. 13 north. can't buy it in "buckets" any more but it's still the same "englishes" chicken. we eat there alot. best in town and has been for decades. too bad all the englishes rests. closed.

I've gotten Royal Farms chicken several times at the location near Milford Street and the one off 13. I thought it was pretty good. I think it is on the pricey end for "fast food". I don't purchase the sides. My favorite is English's which you can buy at Bay Country Meals near the mall.

PEAKY'S in Princess anne has the best chicken in the world.. always cooked fresh to order so it takes 20 mins. they just opened one in ocean city too.

new york fried chicken is the jump off

we love RF and Dayton's...only sides we buy is coleslaw from Chic-fi-Lay and then we add chopped hard boiled eggs to that. mmmmmmm.

Bottom line is that deep fried chicken or oven baked, timing is everything, and eating it in the first half hour of pulling it out of the cooker is the bomb. So, I do it myself so I know.

Seriously, you go to a convience store to purchase chicken and expect it to not be greasy? Old?
I recently saw the Dollar store near the Hobby Lobby has a banner on their outside wall advertising steak for a dollar. Tell what you think about that.

Several factors affect fried chicken
1)How often the oil is changed 2) is it old burnt up oil 3) the person who cooks it may over cook it 4) How long it sat after it was cooked 5)Temperature affects how it cooks
Each store is different

Try the KFC grilled. Little grease and very nice herbs & spices.

Royal Farms is sooooo good. Are you seriously comparing rofo fried chicken to a sams club $5 whole chicken? complaining about 89 cent sides?? What, should they be free? Royal Farm is legend, if you can't handle it, too bad.

royal farms sucks

RF is pretty good chicken. I'm not an expert taster but have lived all over the world and had a huge variety of fried chicken. RF is definitely "good." I'm not going to rate it against other chains. However, for a place and I can slam into and get a chicken dinner in less that 4 minutes, and that dinner is pretty damn good, I'll stay with them. Yeah, I can cook a better bird than them. However, it takes me 45 minutes and $20 to do so. With RF I pop in, pop out, and have a decent meal.

Someone mentioned that some of the cuts are a bit undercooked, and I agree. I'm a breast man and you should never see pink in the breast yet I often do at RF. However, I've never gotten sick.

I also like the fact that the guy/gal preparing my request always asks me if I want to pick out the specific breast. Kind of a nice turn.

To those who have never set foot outside of Del or Mar or Va, RF is mediocre chicken at best. It's reasonably priced and convenient but can be quite greasy. The sides are nothing to brag about either. The fries in particular are horrible. To those who claim RF chicken is the best, you probably feel Dominos is the best pizza too.

Royal farms is by far the most over priced terrible establishment I have ever been to its awful the chicken is by no means great at all and absolutely does not warrant there high prices .

royal farms chicken tastes good, i prefer it. too bad it is never fresh, its over priced and has me using the bathroom quite frequently. they are supposed to cook a new batch every 1hour and 45minutes, and i doubt that ever happens. just like mcdonalds and the bins they keep the food in........forever. i suppose a lot of us have worked fast food at one time or another. THE QUALITY OF PREPING, AND CARING FOR THE FOOD FROM COOKED TO SERVE JUST ISNT THERE ANYMORE. IT ALL SUCKS AND IF YOU GET SOME GOOD FOOD FROM WHEREVER IT IS YOU DARE, ITS JUST PLAIN LUCK. THATS ALL THERE IS TO IT. Ive just had some chicken from royal farms the night of the big snow and the royal farms in fallston,MD needs to step up their quality control because my stomach is still giving me problems 2 nights later. i know it was their chicken because i havent eaten anything else. so, take a chance, maybe youll get lucky......or not.

Royal farms is SO much better than dayton's overlooked piece of charcoal and royal farms is cheaper

Except they aren't monster size by any stretch of the imagination. A 5lb chicken tops.about normal size not like KFC pigeon wings.

Save your time and money. Avoid royal farms chicken. We purchased it for the first time tonight. Greasy is an understatement. The smell of stale oil was so obvious...the chicken pieces literally STUNK. Fried food prepared properly DOES NOT soak up oil. Just ask any professional fry chef. Oil temperature that is too low...frying beyond proper time levels...re-frying previously fried food...or using expired oil will always result in oil soaked food. Frying is a science and is far more than simply dunking food in hot oil. Thst said, using expired oil is usually the culprit in poorly fried food...and everyone knows what expired oil smells like. Expired oil doesn't "fry" food...it "permeates" the food. We phoned the location, and they said they change the oil every day...but at 4:00 in the morning. Changing the oil every day may not be enough though...it goes bad not by the time from changing, but rather by how much food you fry in it. And lastly...for now at least...WAWA has far more choices, is much better at overall freshness, and has greater accessibility...hands down. (And they got their hoagie rolls DOWN)...everyone knows first and foremost, great sandwhiches depend on the bread.

I worked for RoFo in the deli, all I can say watch what you buy. Our manager had dropped a rack of chicken right out of the fryer and dropped it on the floor picked it up and put it right into the tray and sold it. She also has used outdated chicken
