Wicomico County Job Base Continues to Diminish - Latest BLS Numbers For March 2013 Show Wicomico Lost 1002 Jobs Compared to March 2012
Wicomico County continues to bleed jobs as the latest BLS numbers show that Wicomico County lost 1002 jobs in March 2013 verses March 2012. This is the second worse monthly reporting in the past year as February recorded the worst monthly loss - (1167). The Bureau of Labor Statistics Workforce indicator shows that the county's workforce is diminishing despite a population increase. What this information indicates is that as people exhaust their unemployment benefits - they are still essentially unemployed. Even though the overall unemployment rate shows a slight decline - the more accurate way of assessing our overall job base strength is through increased employment - and that is simply not happening.

Something has to give. This scenario cannot continue or our county will simply disintegrate. I heard the other day that American Airlines announced they were hiring 1500 flight attendants and that they had to take down their announcement in eight days because they had over 20000 respond.

That should tell you how bad it is out there. Simply look for yourself.
I noticed that the numbers in the workforce shows a general trend that it is getting smaller and smaller. Not good especially when you consider that there is more college graduating classes every six months.
Do not worry. The Democrats will just increase taxes to make up for it. Bend over Salisbury, yours is coming.
ITS NO WONDER THAT THERE ARE LESS AND LESS JOBS. TO MUCH TAXATION AND GOVERNMENT REGULATION. I WOULD NOT OPEN A NEW BUSINESS HERE IN THE US EITHER.
The job growth scenario is totally unsustainable. The numbers clearly show that something is out of kilter.
Well, you know, what can I say. Voters chose to support special interest projects that include subsidies rather than concentrate on bringing industry to Salisbury.
I stopped into the GOB the other day to pay my property taxes and Jim's kiosk was all folded up and put aside, that didn't last long!
Look, you get what you vote for. We could have fixed at least our little portion of the state and actually move forward well ahead of other more rural areas.
Many have asked me several times a day to stick around in Maryland and run again. My reply has been, ARE YOU CRAZY?
If 14,000 registered voters can't get off their rear ends to vote, screw them. They deserve what they get.
These numbers in this Post show YOUR Leaders are, (and have been) failing you. Salisbury News continues to expose the TRUTH and accurate numbers, yet the public screams and yells but doesn't get out to vote.
No, I'll go back to Delmar, DE. where I'll continue to report on Salisbury News. I'll NOT do what many local organizations have demanded I do by creating nice fluff pieces about Salisbury and COVER UP the REALITY, such as this Post.
As you have seen through advertisers, I'll NOT be controlled by an advertiser, (who is no longer with us) demanding we publish fluff pieces, good riddance.
In the end when YOU have finally noticed every other home here is in foreclosure, friends and neighbors are desperate for food, gas money and jobs, maybe then you'll actually get off your rear ends and vote. You just pray someone will come along for $25,000.00 a year who can actually fix the local economy.
In the mean time, enjoy your welfare, section 8 housing, food stamps, Obama phones and every other handout Ireton, Pollitt, O'Malley and Obama afford you. Let them be your heros. When your bowing to them like we've seen Obama do to other Leaders throughout the World and we publish pictures of you doing so, then you'll finally realize the VALUE of your vote.
Oh, its coming Folks. We've been warning you about this for at least 5 years and each and every year we're getting closer to the reality of it all, not the opposite.
In the mean time, I'll sit back in Delmar and watch it all unfold.
Joe. We may be at a point of no return. When we have 48% of the people in this Country living off the government we are in trouble. We have illegal immigrants and people on the terrorist list getting welfare. You may thank the liberal Democrats for that.
Joe, I voted for you and so did all the people I know and talk to -I probably have neighbors who could give a s**t less, and didn't vote at all, but the majority of people I know, did vote for you. I still say something went very, very wrong with the city election results. By the way, all of them voted for Debbie too, same scenario, but we'll never know in this good old boy town what happened.
wow, that's terrible.
Pollitt wants 8% Jimbob wants as much bend over Salisbury and Wicomico County.
1105--I agree--after all electronic voting with no paper ballot back up was set up by Democrats and has been proven to be highly vulnerable to hacking. Alot of people were infatuated by Jake Day but hated Ireton so none of it makes sense. The blame lies squarely on DISTRICT 2 and all of its bleeding heart wealthy liberals who stabbed the fiscal crusader, Debbie in the back. Hope they enjoy what happens to their neighborhoods now.
Here at SBYnews most all of our reporters know what is soon to come. Very soon - the US will experience hyper-inflation as a result of the US Treasury printing so much money. Already - China, Russia, Germany, Saudi Arabia and others are moving away from the US dominated reserve currency and into their own because of the US's abuse of buying back their own bonds -(currency manipulation). Soon folks - it is not a question of will it happen - but when. Don't just take my word - check into the some of the most astute investors like Jim Rodgers, Warren Buffett, George Soros, among others.
Scary to see so much of a retraction in the workforce numbers. It keeps getting smaller and smaller. I agree, something is definitely going to happen with our economy. There is no way this country can make good on its debts. No way.
No jobs, no hopes for jobs and these assho--s are raising taxes in the city and county. Where the h---l is the money coming from?
Raising taxes at this time is the single worse thing the city and county can do. The BOE doesn't need so much money to throw away while people are losing their jobs. Make do with what you have until things turn around for heaven sakes. Do the right thing for a change for the taxpayer.
I am one of the statistics in the County that was forced out of a long time job and the only thing the Jack A$$ says is he sympathizes for me!
Karma my friend. What goes around comes around.
From the monthly BLS numbers Wicomico has lost job base 8 months in a row - or 10 of the last 14 months. I do not see how our community can survive with a diminished job base scenario. This stats do not look good at all.
This has to effect the county budget because state and local income tax revenues are the largest line item revenues for our county. If Wicomico officials are not careful we will soon find ourselves in the same boat as Stockton, CA.
I do not see how state and local income tax revenues will improve based on this information. If my recollection serves me - the largest revenues for our county originated through state and local income taxes. From these numbers, wicomico is going in reverse.
Joe - do not forget about all of the poor county disparity grants that are being doled out by our elected state legislators. It's as if they want to restrain or hold down our population by doling out 'handouts' and then trumpeting that they have brought home the bacon. How about bringing home some good jobs instead of handouts. I'm tired of handout lunacy. Our people deserve a lot better than we are getting.
It must be getting better, were going to spend 60 million on a new school.
Response to 9:44 - I just saw the video and you are right. And that was CBS covering the event and they are suppose to be liberal. Now that is saying something coming from a liberal media.
It would be interesting to see these numbers compared with the number of retirees either moving or retiring in Wicomico County. Anyone ever think of the bigger picture?
Wicomico County is dying on the vine. Poor Leadership and their decisions have been building for 2 decades. Businesses have closed, gone backrupt or moved out. Much of it related to the poor education, high crime and taxation by stupid dumbocrats that make it impossible for companies to be competitive. Brace yourselves. It is going to get worse. Trick Ricky and Mayor minion will tag team for future failure.
Bitter much
The reality is that there very few low skill jobs remaining on the ES. Locals don't want to work for less than $20/25 per hour. OC needs to import labor for seasonal jobs that were once filled by local kids, but not anymore. They are too good to work at summer jobs. If you are making it on the shore you own a business or work for to government. Quit blaming the same politicians that have been doing the same things as they always have. Adapt or become extinct.
Joe,
Change the word heros to masters.
You get what you voted for or didn't vote at all. This place is pitiful. You all ain't worth the wet snuff I spit out of my mouth who voted for these fools and crap. I too am tired of the hand outs.

Adapt? How do you adapt when our elected politicians raise the local income tax rate to the highest state mandated limit? How do you adapt when our state government keeps imposing more and more regulations that are driving businesses either to Virginia or Delaware? How do you adapt when the BOE collective barganiing units are encumbering our general population? Isn't this the highest form of discrimination.
The decrease in the number of workers in Wicomico does not surprise me as this is a result of over a decade of over government regulation. IMHO - I believe the trend will continue.
I do not believe we are in a recovery. At least not in Wicomico. If we were, the employment numbers would show it.
I see what everyone is saying - the overall job base is shrinking in that the workforce keeps getting smaller and smaller. This is scary in that the numbers seem to indicate that the industrial base continues to deteriorate - although our population is increasing. Maybe someone should alert the major networks like Fox news or CBS and show them what is happening.
Response to 7:52 Posting - 'Alert Fox & CBS'
This is happening in most places throughout the US - but it seems as though the local media (SBYNEWS) has been able to place this under the magnifying glass. Fact is - most americans are so busy making ends meat that they do not have time to decipher what has happened. Thank you SBYNEWS for watching out for the ordinary people.
woe, this is alarming. I would have thought the numbers would have been better especially in light of the fact that the feds have printed so much money.
USA, THE MOST EDUCATED POOR.
