Resume
Dewey Beach-The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating a serious crash in which a pedestrian was struck on Coastal Highway north of Dewey Beach, earlier this morning.

Preliminary investigation has determined that the crash occurred at approximately 1:19 a.m. this morning as Brian T. McDermott-24 of Bryn Mawr, PA was walking in a northbound direction, straddling the edge of the shoulder and right travel lane of Coastal Highway southbound. McDermott was struck by the right front corner of a southbound 2011 Ford Crown Victoria, fully marked patrol vehicle, operated by a 27 year old male Trooper assigned to Troop 7, Lewes. After the impact, McDermott was thrown to the roadway. The Trooper was able to provide emergency medical care until the arrival of Fire and EMS responders.

Brian T. McDermott was transported by Delaware State Police Aviation Helicopter Trooper 2 to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he was admitted in critical condition.

The Trooper was properly restrained and not injured.

Preliminary indications have determined that alcohol does appear to be a factor on the part of the pedestrian.

Coastal Highway southbound at Rogers Avenue was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this crash.

Pedestrians walk on the left side of the road, Bicycles on the right with traffic, and signal and obey traffic rules, including stops and lights.

So many violations out there, I'm sure nobody knows the rules. Isn't this taught in first to third grade?

This one, the ped was on the wrong side of the road. Never saw it coming, and could have moved aside had he been on the correct side of the road.

Either way... driver should have seen him if he was on the shoulder... what is the speed limit in that area? Heard it was 30?? Really bad if thats the case. I dont care how drunk the guy was... unles he was lying in the middle of the road he should not have been hit.

Maybe the pedestrian never saw it coming but the cop did! Negligence.

What was the trooper doing at the time, besides not paying attention?

If he was wearing dark clothing it is possible he didn't see him....I almost hit somebody a few months ago on Camden Ave that was walking on the side of the road/in the travel lane....didn't see the person till I was so close that I had to violently swerve to avoid hitting the person. It is possible to hit a pedestrian if they are in your lane and it not be your fault....I am speaking from experience. I was rattled for weeks over this...my wife was with me and our daughter was in the back seat.

Perhaps looking at his computer. I seen from my truck that sits up high a cop surfing the Internet on his lap top driving down the road the other day ?

That's why they tell you to wear bright clothing instead of dark clothing. You can be seen better. Dark clothing makes you almost invisible. Why do you think these thugs wear dark clothing when they are out looking for something to steal or someone to assault?

It's 30 mph and specifically KNOWN for being a town full of college drunks esp. On the holidays. Pedestrians are always drunk in the way... He has no excuse.

I was there... I arrived at most 5 minutes after the pedestrian was hit and the pedestrian was walking facing the oncoming traffic. The area where the accident happened is very dark at night though, and it can be very tough to see when you are driving. All the more reason for the police officer to be driving carefully... From what I could see both parties were at fault to some degree- a drunk pedestrian walking on the side of the road instead of the side walk and an officer driving faster than advisable considering the drunk crowds and lack of light... just a terrible combination and a tragic result.
