A new study by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) reflects a 9-percent increase in motorcycle deaths in 2012 to about 5,000 fatalities for the year. That marks the 14th year out of 15 that deaths have risen.
The GHSA report looked at each state's fatality counts for the first nine months of 2012 compared to 2011 to project the full year. Previous year projections based on this methodology have mirrored the final numbers. Thirty-four states have increased, 16 states decreased, and the District of Columbia stayed the same.
So, why are motorcycle deaths going up? There are a number of factors.

I'm sure all of the blame is on drivers of 4 wheel vehicles "not paying attention" and not the guy doing a wheelie for a mile and a half down the street. Or weaving in and out of traffic like a maniac, since a bike is narrower and he can ride out a back up.

Probably. That's what usually happens except for the rare cases you mention. You seem to forget that politician out west who routinely and arrogantly ran stop signs, paid the fines and kept doing it until he t-boned a motorcycle killing the guy.
Politician? He was forced to resign. I'm sure he learned his lesson don't you?
On Sunday, as I was crossing the bay, returning to the Eastern Shore I had hardly paid the toll and manevuered into the far lane when I heard such a roar, I thought the Blue Angels were flying! When I realized it was a large group of motorcycles which was speeding across the bridge. When there was no way to pass, the bikers just went between the cars with both lanes filled. I wish I could have alerted the law to apprehend these dare devils. This could be one reason death are up.
