Hurricane Sandy Buckles N.C. 12 On Hatteras Island

HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C.
Hurricane Sandy left N.C. 12 rippled and bubbled, transforming portions of the highway north of Rodanthe into a curling ribbon of asphalt sliced open between its yellow lines.
The highway was Hurricane Sandy's casualty just as it was Irene's in 2011. Though Sandy spared much of the Outer Banks the costly wind and flood damage of previous storms, it cleaved Hatteras islanders' only roadway to the mainland.
Emergency ferries from Rodanthe to Stumpy Point were to begin regular runs today.
