A Comment Worthy Of A Post 11-17-12

Joe, maybe you can contact some of the other municipalities on the lower shore and ask what they have done to help Crisfield, and then report to us. Pocomoke has sent trucks and crews to help and I understand that others have contributed in similar ways. Crisfield is the beneficiary of lots of neighborly help but of course, they need lots more.

One other problem I have noticed is that our Baltimore neighbors do not even know that towns in their own state need help. The media in the metropolitan area has focused on NY & NJ.

Publishers Notes: You are absolutely right and some of the other municipalities should be recognized.

I do know at this point that John Phoebus contacted Mayor Carl Anderton of Delmar, Maryland early on when the Town of Crisfield, (as well as Somerset County) refused to allow Public Works to help out. Carl was able to send, (I believe) 4 people from Delmar. Carl immediately contacted Mayor Jim Ireton and Jim also sent 4 people down to Crisfield. Now, I could be wrong. They may have sent a total of 4 people. Nevertheless, it was an incredible gesture and a huge help either way.

There is a reciprocal agreement between ALL Maryland municipalities in which they are bound to help other communities in such disasters and that is why Congressman Andy Harris was upset that the STATE hadn't stepped in to do more.

Beyond that, I contacted my Brother on the Western Shore last night. I told him what was going on in Crisfield and he knew absolutely NOTHING about it. He own a very large company  with quite a bit of influence in the building industry. Because there is so much need in building supplies he is going to reach out on Monday to these companies to see if they are willing to join him is helping Crisfield as much as possible.

The Main Stream media has dropped the ball. Think about it like this. O'Malley probably thinks that Crisfield doesn't have a lot of voters, therefore, who cares. Think about it. 19 days have passed and those residents are still without heat and many still without electricity. Think about all the hell O'Malley put Baltimore Gas & Electric through the past two years over extended power outages on the Western Shore. You've heard nothing of the sort in Crisfield, as if they don't exist.

IF you have any connections on the Western Shore please contacts them. Encourage them to come to Salisbury News and use the search bar in the top left hand corner and simply type in Hurricane Sandy Crisfield and let them see for themselves just how bad things are down there. Unfortunately this will be the first time many have seen this disaster.

If we join forces, including all other Blogs, together we can help and make a difference. If you know of any other municipalities that have helped please let us know in comments.

Why did Somerset not allow Public Works to help? Was it a concern for cost?
I know counties are struggling financially and there should be funds immediately available from MEMA to distribute to counties when the unexpected happens.
I'm curious to know what MEMA's budget is.

If Crisfield needs help, their Mayor has the responsiblility to request the help of other municipalities. The other municipalities aren't mind readers and how would they even know what kind of help?

Snow Hill sent manpower and equipment as well I think.

That is what you get for low property taxes. No services. You all amaze me...you cry about taxes and big government that is not needed, then cry because there isnt big government to save you. Make up your minds. Btw.....i thought this storm would be nothing and it was a waste of resources preparing. I told you so.

anonymous 1:02, There's a very good reason you sit home all alone at 52 years old. It's because most people don't like people like you.

When any form of government doesn't step in, (at least here on the Shore) we come together and volunteer to help each other. White, Black, Hispanic, it doesn't matter.

Then there's people like yourself who sit back and try to reverse the blame. We have a reciprocating agreement with other municipalities to come to those in need and the Mayor of Crisfield failed to do his job, it really is that simple.

You make it also sound like the people in affordable housing don't pay any taxes, they do. It might not be as much as you and I pay but I can tell you a LOT of people who started out in affordable housing that pay millions of dollars in their lifetime in taxes. Take many of the professional football, baseball and basketball players just as a quick example.

Yes, some make a career off the system but I can also tell you that OTHERS become politicians and make a career off the taxpayers as well. You might want to even look at where Obama started and where he is today. That is NOT an attack against Obama in any way, shape or form.

WE pay taxes so that ALL Americans can and should be treated equal. The residents of Crisfield do not deserve to be treated the way they are being treated and in my honest opinion it's like going back to the early 1950's.

1:02 This is the perfect example of how "big government" does not work. Both O'malley and Obama couldn't get to the disaster sites fast enough so they could play Big Shot and bloviate about how they were going to do this and that though both MEMA and FEMA. O"Malley always in need to pat his own back even stood in Crisfield and said he talked to Obama twice in regards to the hurricane damage in MD and Crisfield was going to be built back better than ever.

Okay....Sit back and wait. Pre-accessements, meetings, phone calls...Nothing. Big government does not work. Then you add the utter incompetance of both Omalley and obama to the mix and this is the result. Not even an answer much less results.
Why even have these 2 (FEMA/MEMA) well funded gov't agencies?
I truly do feel sorry for the people who did realize gov't is broken and needed fixing and voted against those 2. Anyone who voted for these 2 and are suffering, the bottom line is you are getting exactly what you voted for-the status quo of incompetance in the form of 2 BS's (O & O) who talked a good game, lied to you time and time again but who have not done a thing productive ever except sponge off the gov't themselves their entire lives.

Pocomoke City officials called Crisfield and offered help before they were asked. That's the good neighbor way. Still, I think that other mayors have done that and not waited to be asked.
