Grocery Stores

Mr. Albero,

Are we ever going to get a decent grocery store in the Salisbury? Foodlions are on every corner but the meat selection is lacking. Giant just plain sucks most of the time. They went downhill after the buyout or whatever changed with them. You have to dig through the meat and dairy products to find items that aren’t close dated or already expired. Walmart is ok but can get wiped out if you don’t get there at the right time. It would be nice to have one of those higher end stores like a Harris-Teeters,Whole Foods or something along those lines.

salisbury cannot support a higher end store

We need a Trader Joe's!!!

Want good meats - go to Riggin's in Crisfield. Fair prices and worth the drive and they will cut to order if you cannot find what you are looking for in the meat dept

If you want great meats, go to Hastings in Delmar.

If you've ever been to the Harris-Teeter store in Fenwick, you know what a nice store looks like. I thought they were going to go where the Super Frest was on College Ave. but that never materialized. I can still hope.

In the Sby area Sams is the best place for meat
Far better than the regular grocery stores

Have there been any real efforts to bring in another store? I've never heard of any.

No Whole Foods is located anywhere on the Delmarva Peninsula. Salisbury is the "Crossroads of Delmarva". Centrally located. Even if they could start out with a smaller store that would be great. I guess it's more beneficial to just add more pharmacies.

Salisbury shoppers are cherry pickers. They go to every store and buy the sale items. Salisbury would not support a high end store. Oh yes! a few people would, but not the heavy amount of shoppers needed to stay profitable. The owner of the Super Fresh shoppingcenter tried to get Harris Teeter, but they are not doing well on the shore and afraid to open another store.

Been going to Hasting for years as have my parents. LOVE that place for meats! However, for other groceries, I have started frequenting the new Redner's in Felton and the Buyler's in Harrington. Well worth the drive.

it's simple economics...places like whole foods, harris teeter and trader joes will never look at salisbury or anywhere else on the shore. compare the incomes of counties that have these stores like in I-95 corridor...not route 50. the shore is walmart country!

Where is Hastings in Delmar? I just moved to Salisbury and would like to check it out.

Giant's not horrible. But my bill has gone up by about 35% when I shop there. The prices of everything have gone up significantly.

Since I live in Easton, I've started purchasing canned and boxed stuff from Target. But I still get my fresh items from Giant. Between the Target purchases and Giant stopping Panini sales, my grocery bills have remained mostly flat.

I guess the supermarket situation here is the same as the department store situation. The Macy's here is pitiful, carrying only a tiny fraction of the higher-end merchandise the chain as a whole carries. I saw Calvin Klein jeans on sale in a recent circular and had to order them on line because the store here doesn't carry them. Boscov's is even worse.

Harris Teeter is no different than any other grocery store. I've frequent one in Arlington VA for years and also the W Fenwick store. They have a small selection organic chicken but that's about it. Their beef is grain fed (pasture/grass fed is best) and is the same factory farmed stuff you get at Walmart. The seafood counter same stuff as everywhere else from Vietnam, Indonesia, etc.
As far as any organics purchased in any grocery stores, since Dole and the other big companies started with a "line" the government has bastardized the true meaning of organic.
I would suggest as Joe has, a real true butcher shop is the place to buy meats or some farms offer buying directly from them.

I like giant, i have no problem with any of the expiration dates, the prices are reasonable, their house brand is better then most. I have to agree Hasting Butcher has excellant meat and is resonably priced.

Just keep building those Walgreens,Riteaids, and CVS stores. They should make up for it.

Giant meat is mostly fresh cut and NOT treated with 12% solution, but I can't shop there for regular dry and canned groceries; they're too high. I'm sure Hastings is the same way if they cut their own meat. Food Lion is/ was second, but are leaning heavily into the prepackaged 12% solution meats. Wal Mart meat is 99.9% 12% solution meat on any given day. Might as well lick a salt lick. I can't taste the meat past the "solution".

Since Foodlion is high on other groceries, I get mine at Wal Mart, and try to get all USA food. There are some things I just have to get at Foodlion just for the flavor.

I have a large garden that gives me great salads and fresh greens, and taters and squash for the winter. (tip: Only plant ONE squash seed!)

So, yeah, I'm a single Dad and a "cherry picker" and I eat great, tasty food for reasonable prices!

Harris Teeter or Wegmans would be amazing

free is not for me said...

we need to do away with the independece cards in the grocery stores and this would help the meat selection because when i go to the food lion after 11.am [once the pemberton cage has woke up} from a hard day of previous work i see all the entitled sheboons with family packs of beef, chicken, and pork stacked in a cart so heavy it needs pheumatic wheels on it.i say set up local warehouses with milk cheese and canned goods for this hard working bunch and pay for that stuff with a i card that way real working ppl can BUY WITH REAL CASH good meats, produce, and other grocery items

You stole my thunder Joe.I was going to recommend Hastings but you beat me to it.

I encourage everyone to give the Camden Ave Farmer's Market a try. We attended a farmer's market in Fairfax Va recently that was outstanding in the quality and variety of fresh and local meat and produce. The same is available at the Camden Ave market although on a smaller scale. I'd love to see it continue to grow and expand.

The best grocery store that I ever shopped at was U-Crops in Richmond Virginia!
