City Leaders Continue To Question Littering And Smoking As Increasing Image Problems

The city’s beach and Boardwalk smoking question — often discussed, but never acted on by city officials — could be gaining new momentum as members of the City Council have expressed concern over littering and an activist group has begun to press not only the health concerns involved, but also the image problem they believe the town faces from smoking and cigarette butt disposal.

The topic of banning, or at least curtailing, smoking on the city’s beaches and Boardwalk was last raised in June, when Terry Steimer of the Ocean City Surfrider Foundation asked the council for its continued support of the foundation’s cigarette butt receptacle program. The initiative has seen 200 disposal containers placed on the beach, in order to combat the annual influx of butts to the city’s otherwise pristine sand.

They forced everyone to smoke outside now they are surprised it has turned into a littering issue? Plus we have replaced smoking diseases with diseases of obesity. Controlling smoking has been a loser.

I am a smoker and when I go to the beach I never throw my cigarettes on the beach I always dispose of them in a bag and then throw in the trash can. This is just common courtesy.

12:43 is correct.

banning smoking will cause loss of revenue to business

i can tell you that i eat out 80%less then prior to the smoking ban.
this would cause me to avoid the boardwalk, and businesses on it.

oh wheile we are at it, can we do something about overweight people in spandex and bikinis? thats disusting

Maybe they should start with banning some of those NASTY t-shirts you see on the boardwalk before they start with this.

12:42: I was with my husband and my sister-in-law, so three people were taking up three spaces. I don't know what you look like, but I'm about 5'5" and weigh 117. My sister-in-law and I are former cigarette smokers.

I dont think OC has officially banned smoking on the beach , jusyt is highly discouraging it.
BTW, I go to Assateague where you are free to do most anything. OC has gone to the pitts.

I don't go to beaches much but when I did I used to bury my butts. Then I changed to putting them into cans and throwing the cans away when we left along with any other trash we had.

BTW, I would much rather see a cig butt lying on the sand than a beached whale or 80 year old in spandex or bikini. And then there are the man boobs.

Or how about the piles of horse poop from the police? But that is better than the gays boys frolicking around with their boy toys.

And some of you think a cig butt is worse than these? I would rather be sitting next to a polite smoker than either one of you.
