SCOOTER COLLISION RESULTS IN SERIOUS INJURIES

On Friday, May 18, 2012, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Ocean City Police responded to the area of 45th Street and Coastal Highway for a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a scooter. When officers arrived on scene, they observed the operator of the scooter to be unconscious in the roadway.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a Cadillac passenger vehicle was attempting to make a turn from the northbound turn lane through stopped traffic into the 45th Street Village. The driver of the vehicle, who was identified as James T. Carrollton, 23, from Toms River, NJ, made the left turn and failed to yield to the scooter operator, who was traveling south in the bus lane.

The operator of the scooter, whose name is not being released at this time, was flown by Delaware State Police helicopter to Peninsula Regional Medical Center for serious injuries. Carrollton was issued a citation for failing to yield the right of way on a left turn.

With gas prices the way they are more and more people are going to be using scooters. Now I'll be the first to admit they are a hugh pain in the neck but we all have to come to grips with this and take extra care to be on the lookout for them.
Everyone including those using scooters want to get home to their families and no wants wants the hassle or expense of hitting one.

Traffic needs to be banned from ocean city.
Use the bus.

It says he was turning from the northbound turn lane through stopped traffic in the southbound lane. If the rest of the southbound traffic was stopped then shouldn't the southbound scooter in the bus lane stop also? I do not know if this intersection is controlled by a traffic light, but the way this release is written, sounds to me like the scooter driver was at fault!

I thought the same 4:39 but what I'm thinking it the cars weren't stopped because of a red light but were stopped because traffic was so heavy on Fri due to the car show in town. The stopped cars maybe hadn't blocked the intersection so the driver went through not even thinking someone on a scooter was coming up the bus lane.

no license no registration no tags no insurance, they don't belong on the roads. if you are dumb enough to run one of these among 2000 pound vehicles and risk your life then so be it!
