After months in development, Philips is finally ready to sell LED light bulbs that last 20 years. Could be quite a game-changer — after all, if you didn't have to change a light bulb between now and when your unborn child graduates from high school, just think of all the precious minutes you could spend on other tasks. And the environment would surely thank you.

I don't know if anyone recalls,but a group used to go door to door selling light bulbs.It may have been in the form of a fund raiser,but the salesmen would do a demonstration,claiming that their bulbs would outlast a normal bulb by years.I can't recall the name of the company,but we bought a pack around 1979 or 1980.They actually did last a couple years each,but they were very expensive.
$60 is way too much, these things should cost around $5. We get ours from china and they do last for a long time AND don't use very much electricity.
I've had bregular incandescents in my house that have lasted 20 years, some 15, and a few 5 or less. CFL's last 3 on average here. so, incandescrnts have my vote at what, fifty cents each?

I have a lot of chicken houses and a lot of bulbs, about 1,200 more or less. Three years ago we switched to CFLs and cold cathode dimmable flourescents. Yeah, they saved electricity but after about 5 flocks the light output had decreased dramatically. So dramatically that the chickens would not gain weight until I replaced all the expensive bulbs with regular incandescents. I saved some electricity but I lost a hell of a lot of income from underweight chickens.
Moral of the story...We can use "green" light bulbs and save electricity but the cost of food will increase so much more than the savings on power.
The article is about LED bulbs NOT cfls. I won't have CFLs because of the EMF they put off, high cost and short life. LED bulbs on the other hand are starting to come of age.
LED's only put out a very small spot light even the ones made with many led's to generate a flood light still do not emit the whole room lighting of a regular incadesant. LED's only work if you want lighting on a specific spot!

hell yeah. I know a LOT of people who are struggling with food prices, electricty rates, and gas prices, but STILL have lots of cash left over to go out and buy a SIXTY DOLLAR light bulb. In fact, they usually buy about 10-15 of them for all the lights in their house. What world are you people living in? The world of delusion or the world of comfort and security?
i wouldn't pay 60 cents for one cause I personally boycott ge. not much impact I'm afraid, but I feel good about it...

LED is the future and has next to zero energy consumption. Obviously its going to be expensive at first.
Basic economics, people. Wow, I cant wait to get out of this clueless, misguided, uninformed local populace.
No wonder why salisbury is going downhill, just look at the minds of the people who vote around here.
