People for the American Way today called on the Mayor and City Council of Ocean City, Maryland to cancel the invitation to retired Lt. Gen. William “Jerry” Boykin to headline this week’s Ocean City Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast.
Michael Keegan, President of People For the American Way, issued the following statement :
“Lt. Gen. Boykin has made his name by being one of the most bigoted and offensive figures on the national stage. While a top official at the Pentagon, Boykin gave inflammatory speeches framing the war on terror as a holy war against Islam, which earned him public rebukes from many, including President Bush. Since his retirement, Boykin has devoted himself to spreading intolerance of Islam and promoting outlandish and harmful conspiracy theories about President Obama and others.
“By inviting Boykin to speak at a prominent community event, Ocean City officials have effectively endorsed Boykin’s hate-filled rhetoric. I hope that the invitation to Boykin was an oversight by city officials. Now that they have Boykin’s full record, they should reject bigotry and withdraw Boykin’s invitation to speak.”

This is AMERICA, and we have a First Amendment right to freedom of speech.

This is a man who not only knows Islam from personal self education and experience, wants to educate others on a global scale. I support his right to speak, and will decide on my own if what he says is indeed palatable and true.

Freedom of Speech only stands if you are promoting the left wing agenda. If the Ocean City caves in to this garbage I will make sure I take my vacations and many beach trips elsewhere. By the way Ocean City doesn't have the only beach around.
You folks don't really seem to understand the Constitution or what "freedom of speech" means. Freedom of speech means the government can't censor you or stop you from speaking. It doesn't mean that people can't be uninvited from giving an address at a certain venue. Boykin's constitutional rights won't be violated in the least if he's disinvited. He can still say whatever he wants, but he just can't say it at that certain venue because the people who are sponsoring the program don't want him.
I love all these people who scream about the Constitution who really have no clue what the Constitution says.
