Paula McGowan has cut out soda, switched to store brands for other foods and even sent her boyfriend hunting for deer so she can put food on the table.
Still, she finds herself struggling with higher food prices.
“It’s milk, bread, just the basic stuff,” she said. “We’re looking at basics and it’s all going up.”
After two years in which overall food prices barely budged, groceries are getting more expensive.
The price of food at home is projected to rise by 4 to 5 percent this year, and another 2 to 3 percent next year, according to the Agriculture Department. That’s adding another financial worry for many people already living with tight budgets thanks to the weak economy and high jobless rate.

The cost savings by using corn to make ethanol has shifted the cost by increasing the cost of food stuff. In one pocket and out the other. Gasoline is still too high.
All government is great at making money disappear.
I have noticed the enormous increases @ Food Lion in Berlin & Ocean City. I'm not talking about a measly 5 or so percent increase, I'm talking about a gigantic 20%-40% increase of prices from as few as 2-3 months ago.
Milk went up to about $4.50, bread is over $3 a pop, and the list of increases goes on & on.
I recently went to the Wal-Mart in Salisbury where milk was about $3.50 & bread was less than $2/loaf. I think some sort of scam is going on @ Food Lion because Wal-Mart's prices only went up about 5% over the past few months.

The prices at Walmart are going up too. Maybe not as much as at Food Lion but they are going up. The price is either going up or the amount in the product goes down but they keep it at the same price. Aren't they opening a Super Walmart in Berlin? Maybe Food Lion is just trying to rack up some money before they take a huge hit in their profits.
It's all about where you shop. I paid 2.99 for my milk, and 1.50 for my bread. Same quality. The Shore needs an Aldi's, it'd work well near SU. I shop there for all my basics, and save on literally every item.
You have to shop around. Walmart has always been lower in prices, but just like other stores, some of the cheaper goods are not always the best. Best way to do anything is to shop around. All the grocery stores have competed on prices for customer bases.

Super Wal-Mart should be in Berlin by mid next year. That was my theory as well regarding Food Lion scamming their customers with inflated prices to rack up as much profits as possible before Super Wal-Mart takes over a ton of their business.
Their massive nationwide increases also coincided with the disappearance of most Super Fresh stores, which I believe Food Lion used to their advantage as well.
