Private Prison Charges Inmates $5 a Minute For Phone Calls While They Work For $1 A Day

Last year the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the nation’s largest private prison company, received $74 million of taxpayers’ money to run immigration detention centers. Their largest facility in Lumpkin, Georgia, receives $200 a night for each of the 2,000 detainees it holds, and rakes in yearly profits between $35 million and $50 million.

I'm afraid I don't have much sympathy for people who broke the law and are serving time in jail. I pay for my phone services too!! And it isn't cheap! They should have thought about their loss of freedom prior to committing crimes!

You guys are sad. This is abuse and exploitation. NOBODY pays 5 bucks a minute for a phone call. Just because they are in prison does not make it right.

What the hell is wrong with you?

Is this a problem? I don't think so.

Why is it abuse and exploitation 3:06? Telephone usage isn't a right, it's a privilege. It's not like they are charging them $5 for a meal or for pulling a tooth when they only make a dollar a day. That would be abuse and exploitation.

Besides it could be considered a lesson in financial responsiblity. Like saving money for something you really want.

Oh, I don't know. Maybe because the article said that. Did you even read it?

Technically yes. But inmates are still entitled to a phone call once a month unless on restriction.

I don't understand your logic.

Just to let most of you know the phone calls are paid for by the law abiding citizens. How would a non working inmate pay that kind of money for phone calls or anything else.I work in a jail and see people putting monies in inmates accounts all the time. It is the law abiding citizens that are being robbed legally not the broke a$$ inmates.
