President Obama unveiled the most significant changes to U.S. education policy in a decade, using his executive authority to give states more flexibility to opt of some provisions of the controversial No Child Left Behind program that was a signature initiative of President George W. Bush.
"We can't let another generation of young people fall behind," Mr. Obama told an audience of education leaders in the East Room of the White House.

At this point, it doesn't matter. We have a generation of children soon to be adults that have been coddled and pushed through for the sake of numbers. They will undoubtedly suck more from our country and put us in more peril. From what I am reading, Obama's Race to the Top, is just the same...numbers,tests, another words crap.
He is pushing for early education, which is before kindergarten. We all know what this means, especially in this county. If you are poor, you are in. Apparently only poor are entitled to early education, yet it does not seem to stop the cycle.
The Race to the Top along with MD new curriculum slated to be state wide by 2014 will only put us farther behind other countries. This is because we don't want any child to feel bad about the way they learn, so we mainstream every child into one group and hope the above average child can instill something into the not above average child.
We have proven time and time again, this way of Thing and Doing does not work. We need to get back to the basics. Reading, writing (computer) and math.
If the powers that be can get over themselves for a minute, we might achieve this.
Obama is doing nothing more than protecting union teachers that are incompetent.
