Striking Verizon Workers Arrested at Salisbury's Mt. Hermon Road Facility

Yesterday morning at about 8:00 a.m. two verizon workers were arrested for blocking the entrance into their facility. The photo above shows one sheriff's car and one Salisbury police car that were dispatched to the scene.

I have no sympathy for the striking workers, as too many of us are unemployed. Be thankful for your job, and don't take it for granted. Work hard and earn respect. And, if we all switched our landlines ( if we still have them)and internet to Comcast, and our cell phones to Sprint or another carrier, they all would be out of a job.

I'm going down monday and apply for a job , screw them greedy union people.

If your anti union simply don't use their product but to attack employees who were hired into a union run company is ignorant.

unions are helping to run this country into the ground. there was a time when unions were needed. but that was many decades ago.

12:32 - AMEN!!!!!!!!! Unions are ruining this country!!!!! There is a man that I know of (true story) filed a complaint with his union Commissioner due to the fact that his paycheck wasn't ready on time!!!!! Seriously?! I will be happy to have a paycheck!!!!! Everyone who is unemployed in Salisbury and surrounding area should all be in line @ Verizon Monday morning to apply for a job!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

They should be thankful for jobs. Fire them as there are dozens who can replace them.

Anonymous said...

Double Amen! Governor Christy is on them in NJ and rightly so. His rating is up so much since he has taken them to task. I am so disgusted with Verizon employees. Our phone lines on the east side were definitely sabotaged last week. I guess the union will win and guess what... our phone bill will go UP. I am thinking of doing like my friends and just using my cell phone. I use it anyway about 80% of the time.

Unions got us the 40 hour work week, coffee breaks, sick time, health benifits, overtime pay. Do you honestly think that without them greedy company owners would have given any employee a paid sick day or health insurance? Yes, there is bad and good in all orginazations, but in the long run, where would the american worker be today without the unions preasuring the owners to give up a little to make it better for his employees.

Anonymous said...

People should ask WHY did they have to go on strike before making judgment. Is Verizon simply refusing to provide additional benefits or take away benefits. Are both sides still talking?

Anonymous said...

The day for unions is long gone. Yes, they were of value at one time, but not in today's world and economy. They do more harm than good, and make their members look like spoiled lazy brats. I worked for a union for years, and it didn't do much other than protect those who had the loudest mouth and worst work ethic. Step aside Verizon workers, and let those who really want to work for a fair wage do your job.

Anonymous said...

1:05 I'm conservative I just know that these employee's are people just like me and have no say in whether Verizon is union or not. Personally I'm anti-union but I'd hate to see a family suffer these guys are making less then 300 a week striking so I'm sure they would rather be working.

Anonymous said...

Look - here is the reality of the situation.

The hard-wired land lines are a thing of the past. It is similar to the horse & buggy industry upon the advent of the automoble.

The company's management should be able to sustain Verizon's diminished customer land line base as they have lost a ton of customers to wireless handhelds.

The workers may never be recalled when the profit numbers roll-in for the next quarterly earnings report. Bottom-line the workers are in a vanishing old technology sector. Life goes on.

I'm tired of the same ole same ole banner waving crap. What have unions done for us lately? Ask GM what unions did for them?

Unions, time to take your fangs out and put them in a cup. If, or when, we need you, we will rinse you off and use you.

Until then, go away. There is a time and place for everything and your time is gone. It may return in the future but for now, you are not wanted or needed.

@ndre:

You really like to hide behind the union thuggery don't you?
You couldn't get hired in any non union job because you probably unqualified to do anything.
You and your union are nothing more than the Sopranos. Just a bunch of stupid goons that take by force what you don't deserve!
Go out and picket! Let everyone know who you are!
See how much respect you get.

To Andre

In case you haven't noticed - austerity is now reckoning with the sectors you mentioned above.

We'll soon have rioting here in the streets of the US. But make no mistake about it - the overwhelming majority of taxpaying citizens are not going to continue to be held hostage to the unions strongarmed tactics. Part of GM's problems are soon going to happen all over again - wait and see. Nothing has changed except Obama has doled out more of the taxpayers money to help prop them up - and this is only temporary.

To 4:23 Posting

I was thinking along the same line of reasoning as you.

A small team of managers should be able to run the diminished operations. And just like you said - the new streamlined operations - (without union workers) - will set a new standard.

Just look at The Daily Times. They have downsized tremendously as a result of lost marketshare. Verizon can do the same.

Anonymous said...

Our union will not standby and let the company get away with continuing to operate.

Anonymous said...

Andre Public unions are worse then private unions. The unions conspire with politicians on their contracts and in turn unions contribute to the campaigns of the politicians, one wheel greases the other and tax payers get screwed. It's a conflict of interest and the practice of public unions should be outlawed.

Of all the 20 comments up to this point, I thought 1:49 was the best. Not only did it make sense, but it was written in "good English," which is important to me. (Those who massacre the language so ignorance, which translates into a less credible opinion). Unions had their function back in the day, but that time is long gone. There are so many who would love to have a job that paid half the salary and benefits that Verizon does. Hopefully, all the striker-- and their unions--will very soon come to their senses or forfeit their jobs!

And that is EXACTLY what is wrong with unions.

Well that makes NO sense. If the union doesn't get their way they will see to it the company closes. That means the union loses more money and the employees have no job at all. Not a very bright move in my book.

To @ndre. I think you are just another trouble maker trying to get people fired up. You probably don't even have a job.

Good, they should be thankful they have a good job.....Dresser, Crown Cork & Seal, I'm sure there's others, shut the doors all because of unions......

Well I must be a nitwit because this sentence makes no sense to me.

Why do you think business is booming in the Southern states? Southern states don't require workers to join unions in a workplace. Also, business likes not paying a union wage to the workers and there is less government regulation. As a result the areas in the South like Texas, are gaining jobs, while the pro-union blue states of the northeast and midwest are bleeding jobs.

Re: "Our union will not standby and let the company get away with continuing to operate.

THIS is the problems with unions. They see it as a big problem that the company made a profit this year.

Don't you want to work for a profitable, healthy company? With so many companies dying, they are doing the right thing and cutting back on extravigant benefits vs. laying off workers.

No, the union thinks that every single penny and more should go to lazy worker. That the company shouldn't dare make money.

Verizon pays very well, and offers very competitive benefits - most places you don't get 401k matching, you don't get 100% medical, you don't get as much sick/personal time.

Many of us work where we're thankful we get 2 weeks vacation, 50% medical and our pay checks clear every week.

If you don't like they pay package, QUIT, there's THOUSANDS of people ready and willing to take your jobs!

"Unions got us the 40 hour work week, coffee breaks, sick time, health benifits, overtime pay."

...and you want sympathy from the private sector that has a 0 hour work week, no paid coffee breaks, no health insurance, and no overtime pay?

Go buy a begging license for the OC boardwalk and report back in 6 months.

I have had my cell phone for many years through AT & T Mobility, great company and service. My friends who have Verizon are always having problems, I have gone with friends to the Verizon store on the north end of town, wait, wait, and wait, and get no where. Get rid of the union, or cross picket lines and keep your job if it is so precious to you. Just be thankful you can work, think of all the people who would love to have a job, but have had accidents and can no longer work.

The CWA has been one of the most ignorant unions on the Shore. They threaten scabs (people who just want to work) because they (union members) don't want to work. Arrest them all! Fire them all! Let these lazy a@@es try to get a job that pays them a fraction of what they make and see how many of them lose their homes and then see how many buy Made in China and don't give a crap about a union label. Unions are Old News and wasting our tax dollars (state, federal, county and city unions) and killing our companies!

What does unemployment average out to an hour? And btw, they are mexicans everywhere. Waiting to take your job because you think you are too good to do it.

I hope Verizon lets you union goons rot on the picket line for the next two years.
I've seen the same stupid union mentality played out over and over again. They sit there on the picket line for years and never get the job back.
You union people are just stuck on stupid!

remember eastern airlines? the union showed them! And all those workers lost their jobs when eastern went belly up! Unions are like any entity they don't care about the workers just themselves! hence union officials making two and three times what their supporters make, sucking the life blood out of them.

I do not know why everyone is bad mouthing the mexicans.

I can only speak for myself - but I would rather have one good mexican worker as opposed 5 american workers. Why?

I'll tell you why -

1. My experience shows that the traditional mexican workers in general - goes about his job diligently - seldom complaining.

2. Any american construction worth his salt knows that hispanics can take extreme heat more so than americans.

3. The US federal government has imposed so many burdensome regulations on the american workforce that it has forced the employers to seek labor elsewhere. Especially - in light of Obamacare - so it is getting worse. Case-in-point current state of high unemployment rate in US - (16% true unemployment rate).

* See footnote below

4. Hispanics know how to prepare the best food in the world - just wait till one offers you a burrito or quesadilla on your lunch break.

Bottom line - the work ethic among the hispanic community is similar in comparison to the 'greatest american generation'. Unfortunately, most of the greatest american generation has now passed away. My father and mother were among those.

*99 weeks of federal & state unemployment extensions - (result of Obama) - mades it so that the typical american worker has more incentive to not work than to go to work. American Free Enterprize companies - cannot and will not standby and allow this to continue. The current state of the US business culture is a breeding ground for an all out civil war.

Of course you agree, you wrote it. You would rather hire a mexican because they can take the heat and make a good taco?

Shame on you. Remind me never to apply for one of your jobs. What's that? No openings? All taken by mexicans?

Hope you contribute to the local food bank for all the Americans that can't get a job. Maybe get some of your friends to drop off some refried beans or something.

There is no need to ever work here in america. With my independence card, unemployment, healthcare, who needs to work. I go to the beach almost everyday.

Anonymous said...

Good american workers are just hard to come by especially in the construction trade. The system has really made it that way. There is way to much government regulation anymore.

Anonymous said...

The current X,Y and Z generations don't want to work the hard jobs: construction, aggriculture, dirty factory work. They want desk jobs and to be managers right away. It is true of the "hard" jobs, that the hispanics have the desire to work them and do NOT cause problems. They show up, will work as many hours as you want them to and do it to the best of their ability. American youths, they quit in a week. So, what does a company do. The Americans don't want to work there. And, then, they cry becuase they don't have a job. I say, give out as many work visa's as you can to fill those jobs and cut the unemployment. Eventually, the young people will realize that "work" is WORK and not play time with gold stars. Union members! Go to work, appreciate what you have or join the unemployment lines! Shut up and do your jobs. They'll be gone in 2-3 years and then you'll really be in trouble. It won't be Play Time for you anymore either. Ask many of your neighbors who've lost their union jobs and how they've struggled ever since. Stuck on Stupid someone said. Great line and very fitting!

For anyone who thinks Unions are helpful, Take a look at Detroit. They are bulbozing empty neighborhoods, thank you Unions.

Someone wrote earlier, Law enforcement is Union run, but thats just because Our liberal legislature made it manditory. Now tell me, how is the Union going to go against the government that gave them the power to begin with. Lets look at the most recent change in the states health dept. They forced all there health inspector to pay into the teachers union whether they wanted to or not.
This shows that all the Unions care about is how much money can they take from you.

What Wisconsin is doing is what every state and company should be doing. Force the Unions to collect there own dues themselve.
See how many people will look at there checks and decide to keep the money in there pockets.

You've got to also remember they criminal side of unions: John Gody for one. Teamsters since the early 30's have been run by the mob. Even in our own backyard, Frank Perdue ( The Chicken Man )in the 80's allegedly had a meeting with a Mob Boss and got permission to use non union drivers to move his chickens. Quickly making Perdue the biggest producer in the country.

Back in the time of Joe Hill, Woody Guthrie, and the Copper Bosses unions were needed. But today, with the laws we have, the union is just a leach sucking us all dry.

I agree for the most part that unions are a waste of time and money. I would only make an exception for teachers.

Anonymous said...

Alex that was quite refreshing coming from you!lol however teacher public unions are corrupt in nature and should be outlawed. If we truly have the students best interest at heart put the school system into the private sector and let parents decide which school they want to send their child too.

That is just a cop out. Mexico is a poor nation compared to ours. What people here call cheap labor is big money where they come from.

Americans will work any job that mexicans do but, they won't be hired if employers can hire someone for 10 bucks less or whatever.

Work long hours and don't cause trouble. That's because they don't want attention drawn to them and they get deported.

Employers make more profit hiring mexicans over americans, bottom line.

Just like most everything else in this country, it all comes back to greed.

Anonymous said...

I have switched carriers on both land lines and cell phones because of this strike. I hope they don't get there jobs back. Bunch of 3 & 4 year olds. Be blessed you have a job.

Anonymous said...

To 3:10

You argument sounds very racist to me. Where I come from - one is rewarded by the amount of work one puts into a project. It isn't the mexican's fault for out hustling the american workforce.

And another point you are overlooking. It is the american government that has created this division by subsidizing the american workforce not to work by offering so many incentives - like 99 weeks of unemployment. It's really a no-brainer from my point of view. I say declare Mexico the 51st State of the Union.

Anonymous said...

4:06

You can forget about mexico becoming the 51st state of America. When they see how much debt we are in, they'll be begging to have a fence installed to help keep the americans from crossing.

Anonymous said...

3:10 obviously you've not been a supervisor in a career field where this is overwhelmingly apparent!!! The Americans quit FAST! They are too lazy, short and sweet! The Mexicans outwork them hands down. This is unfortunately not a cop out but the BOTTOM LINE TRUTH!! It is very sad too.

Anonymous said...

6:37, you got me! I'm a little embarrassed. I meant to write "Those who massacre the language SHOW ignorance, which translates into a less credible opinion." And to think I'm a nut for proof-reading!

It's no wonder they can work for such cheap wages. We pay everything else for them. They put 15 people in a house and all the women with children get food stamps, welfare and who knows what other type of free things. When you get to many of them on a job site they can also become a safety hazard. Most don't speak English so they don't know what is going on around them not to mention most of their time their work is not the best of quality.
