(CBS News) Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who is expected to join the GOP presidential race Saturday, is the longest serving governor in the nation. He won re-election last year by a wide margin. He's 61 years old, married to his childhood sweetheart, and graduated from Texas A&M.
Perry is going to have a big effect on this race. CBS News correspondent Wyatt Andrews looks at his record on the Texas economy.
It's his most important accomplishment and and one Texas-sized claim.
"Texas continues to lead the nation in job creation," Gov. Rick Perry once said.

This man has my vote. At least you know where he stands on the issues and he isn't afraid to make the tough decisions. In order to balance the budget, some Federal programs are going to have to be cut drastically, which initially some people will lose government jobs. Then listen to them squeal. However, increased confidence in the government by business will lead to job creation in the private sector, which will have a ripple effect throughout the economy.
I would like to ask him about his hard work chairing the "Gore for President"campaign in Texas in 1988, and if his adoration of then-candidate Gore carried over into his vote during the 2000 election.
TX's finances have alot to do with a booming energy sector, less to do with gov. policy. Not to mention a large portion of those jobs created were minimum wage "I'm still going to need some assistance" types of positions.
