And the top question on their minds Saturday even as bombings rocked the city around them, was one the top U.S. military officer couldn't answer.
"I actually don't know how the answer to that question," Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told a group of troops, while at the same time telling them they will continue to go to work each day.
But he offered a bit more optimism than defense officials have acknowledged when those questions have come up in recent weeks.
"I have confidence that at some point in time, whatever compensation you are owed, you will be given," said Mullen, who is making his 15th trip to Afghanistan, just two months before he retires. But, he noted, "There are plenty of you living paycheck to paycheck so if paychecks were stopped it would have a devastating impact very quickly."
Questions on military spending and how the ongoing budget struggles will impact them dominated the morning meeting at the Kandahar base, and it was the first one Marines asked when he moved on to Camp Leatherneck later..

i say if the troops wont get paid bring them all home.why should they risk thier lives overseas and not get paid?then they can have the option of being with family.
im prior active duty and a current reservist.i love this country at least whats left of it im suprised we at least have what we have at this point but after the dems and obama are done im sure itll be nothing.i love this country enough to defend it for free but we all know thats not possible.most troops have a family to feed and bills to pay and their jobs are one of the most important.they should be taken care of no questions asked.im sorry for you obamaniods but this wouldve never happened if bush were still in office.i know most troops do this out of love for their country and the sad part is i garauntee most will continue to fight without a paycheck.take away a a political officials paycheck and see what happpens.although they still have income other than their pay im sure they wouldnt be happy.
Our son graduated this weekend from Fort Benning GA... He is part of the less than 1% of today's society that freely joins the US Army during a time of war..... I say stop paying the President and Congress so the brave men and women who serve this country can do so with out worrying.....
