Wal-Mart Shifts Store Site Away from Hallowed Ground

WASHINGTON - Wal-Mart is going to build a Supercenter in Orange County, even after a long fight over its location.

The company announced Monday it will put the store at the intersection of Route 3 and Somerset Ridge Road, about three miles west of the site that sparked controversy and a lawsuit.

The initial location -- adjacent to Wilderness Battlefield Park -- was scrapped after opposition from Civil War preservation groups, several noted historians and a lawsuit. The site marks the first clash between Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant in 1864.

The preservation groups say they have no objection to the new site. The store could bring 300 jobs to Orange County.
