Today's Survey Question

What do you think of a plan allowing local school boards to impose another property tax on top of the current property tax?

I already pay school taxes through the regular county tax.
I have never had children, have never complained about paying my share to fund the school system, but I am 60 years old now and having paid in all my life toward social security, retirement and taxes that I probably won't ever see any benefit. I will damn sure complain if this happens. What don't people understand about I don't have it to give? Things keep up.....there is going to be major anarchy.

I would think that local school boards have no constitutional right to tax anything. Let them sell Girl Scout cookies.

I can't afford any increase. These last 3 years have been a struggle with the increases in property tax.

Happens in every other state.

I thought that was the reason Slots came to MD...

stick a fork in me, I am done.
What about the people with several children in the school system. Perhaps there should be some scale that addresses that, as well as adjusts for those that are seniors without children in schools. I am sure this idea will go over like a fart in church.

Total B.S.! They need to stop their criminally wasteful spending

What a precedent....would the police then be allowed to impose their own "tax" (other than the indirect ones they already impose) to cover their costs (which would also be in addition to the taxes we already pay to cover their costs)? I can think of several "entities" that would probably love to have a separate taxing authority. I'm gonna have a seance at my house tonight...see if I can raise the spirit of those Bostonians who threw all that tea overboard because the tax was too high...it shouldn't be too hard...I'm sure they are already spinning in their graves. God help us against our "leaders" who spend money like its coming out of a faucet at the State House, and THEN tax, fee, fine, and surcharge us (in addition to the "saturation" patrols and the revolving various other police "campaigns" designed to get more money from the citizens) in order to correct the effects of their incompetent bumbling. To those who think I am too hard on politicians, please answer this question --- in the last 30 years, despite the slew of promises by every politician who ran for office, has anything improved? Education? Infrastructure? Taxes? Economy? Personal financial security? World stability? The only thing that has been improved is the tighting of the noose attached to our wallets and the government's ever increasing restrictions on the freedoms (sometimes the complete elimination of them) Americans have enjoyed for 200 years. Stop spending instead of finding ways to fund the latest deficits politicians CREATE. And I won't do the seance.

Sounds like we need our own "union busting" party around here. And maybe school choice/voucher program. Then maybe parents could get some value from all these taxes.

We already have over HALF our tax revenues going to the schools, and that's way too much. No way.

Why isn't this coming to the voters in the way of a referendum. Let the voters decide. Why don't the school districts have budgets that allow for repairs and such expenses? That is what the everyday homeowner has to do.

A non elected body imposing a tax - unconstitutional. An elected body without taxing authority - ditto.

You think the fools will ever learn that they need to start providing some value to receive monies. The revenue cap is in place because citizens are tired of paying for nothing.

Start by providing better education with money in hand; then talk about improvements and costs.

Perhaps those with children should be paying the additional school tax. Until there is more responsibility for the children you have, it will continue to be someone else's money that pays for their education.

This will be a tough sell.
On one hand, you have people screaming how our schools are awful and is such disrepair, no money for books, the list goes on. There needs to be something done to generate more money for these things, right?

On the other hand, we pay property taxes (imo, not a lot in this county tho), so just how much out of my 4100.00 a year goes to the schools in this county? How is this broken down to really benefit my 3 kids or am I con'ting to pay for poorer schools and programs that I don't think we need? I may never really know. I may be in the minority but I would pay more if it truly went to the kids and not to he who lobbies the hardest (BMS).

That being said, I have 3 kids in the system in Salisbury, and IF Dr F thinks that for one minute that he will have power to spend my money directly he has another thing coming. So this would lead to yet another group(paid well, I am sure) to be in control of this money. I don't know if it would truly work and benefit schools. Then I think you would start to see local lobbying groups trying to get money for whatever they want. Omg and don't get me started if Ricky was able to get his hands on this money.
It will be a very slippery slope no matter how or if they do this.

1242:
a voucher system would never work here, where would you take your voucher to? Forget about choice, can you imagine the fights that would ensue to get your kid into your school of choice, and we all know the schools I am speaking about.

This idea will surely be interesting to watch unfold though.

1:47 that is not fair. many of those with children dont have the money to pay the extra tax. can you imagine a welfare family with 6 kids having to pay for anything.....

There is school tax in PA. If you own any property u pay it regardless if u have any children or not. FYI: School tax is just as much as city property taxes and it seems to always go up every year.

Let's see the list of overpaid administrative types who are receiving a check each week over at the bored of education.

We can start cutting lots of expenses right there.

We are being taxed enough as it is.

Things have really changed. When I was in school I can vividly remember when our schoolteachers would raise money through bake sales.

The parents & teachers would periodically offer bake sales whereby the proceeds would benefit the kids. My mother would donate several cakes & pies and so would many other children's parents.

Now-a-days when the teachers want money they almost physically try and rob, both, the parentless and parents.

One thing that would help in Wicomico County is if they gave the Delmar Elementary school to Delmar. They fight any kind of re-districting so let them have it and pay for it!

Anonymous said...

who or what gives the school board the authority to raise taxes?

Anonymous said...

Are you serious? I'm completely against it. I feel my wife and I should not even have to pay a school tax since we do not have kids and will never have kids. It's a persons choice to have kids so if you have kids it's the parents responsibility to see (and pay) that their child has an education. Not mine. We pay enoughin taxes!

If this were an elected school board then any tese types of rips offs could be voted on.. not imposed upon

I think there should be some accountability for the high taxes we already pay to this county and the state of Maryland! We are not be told where the money is spent and how funds are allocated to justify what we pay already. I think if the state and county governments come clean on this, we would have a better understanding of how our funds are spent. Right now I can't see the justification in this.
