Job Killing Gas Tax Hikes Being Prepared In Annapolis

Higher costs at the pump mean more out of businesses bottom lines and potential job losses.

Truckers fearful of lost revenue and job losses protested in Annapolis today. About 40 trucks have rolled by the Maryland State House to protest a proposed gas tax increase. Beltway Companies in Baltimore, says the propose 10-cent increase to Maryland’s 23.5-cent gas tax would hurt the state because truck drivers would avoid buying gas in Maryland. A proposed increase in the state’s vehicle titling tax could drive trucking companies from Maryland.  (“Truck Drivers Protest Proposed Gas Tax Increase” Associated Press, ,” 2/1611)

Higher costs to ship goods mean less revenue for businesses. That means the extra costs that come from driving the store's delivery van 70,000 miles a year come from only one place: "right out of the bottom line." (Jonathan Fhey and Sandy Shore,  “High pump prices rattle drivers and businesses,” Associated Press,  2/28/11)

Less revenue for businesses means higher costs for consumers. Elkridge-based Kane Co., whose businesses include Office Movers, Office Shredding and Office Installers, operates a fleet of more than 100 moving trucks as well as 25 tractor-trailers, according to Chief Operating Officer Ron Meliker. “If the price of fuel continues to rise, rates would go up as well, he said. (Gus G. Sentementes and Liz F. Kay  “Revolt in Libya, surge at the gas pump,” Baltimore Sun, 2/23/11)

Gas tax will hit families’ bottom lines too

Marylanders are already struggling with high fuel prices and a poor economy – Maryland Democrats’ gas tax would make it worse. High fuel prices are putting the squeeze on drivers’ wallets just as they are starting to feel better about the economy. (Jonathan Fhey and Sandy Shore,  “High pump prices rattle drivers and businesses,” Associated Press,  2/28/11)

Maryland drivers are already outraged over high costs. “I think the gas is already high enough as it is. People are having problems with the economy finding jobs,” said Siren Davis a Maryland driver. ““Transportation is already bad enough, why should we have to pay another tax on top of taxes.” (Kai Jackson, “Gas Prices On The Rise Again” WJZ News Baltimore, ,” 2/1611)

Increases in oil prices due to Middle East turmoil show no signs of slowing down.

Already high gasoline prices are going higher today with new turmoil in the Middle East.  Oil prices climbed Tuesday as Iran clamped down on anti-government protesters and unrest in the Middle East threatened to keep energy prices high for months to come. (Chris Kahn  “Oil prices climb as Iran tensions escalate,” Associated Press, 3/1/11)

MDGOP launches http://link.sc.states.gop.com/?65-1320-2856-125-11585 to inform Marylanders about negative gas tax impacts and to provide the tools to stop any increases. “If we don’t stop them, everything from driving to work, taking your kid to school, to running a business is about to get more expensive – all because Democrats think they know how to spend our money better than we do,” said MDGOP Chairman Alex X Mooney.

What this article doesn't state is that diesel tax is already at a higher rate at $.2425 per gallon. I purchased 19756 gallons of diesel for my trucks in 2010, with 11944 of those purchased locally in Maryland. A $.10 increase per gallon would cost my business an additional $1194 per year. Since Delaware's tax rate is only $.22 per gallon and I travel mostly through Delaware, I certainly don't mind giving Delaware more of my business.

Taxes, fines, fees, and levies. Rate increases, surcharges, lions, tigers, and bears. Oh my. These politicians (spit the taste out of your mouth now) are INGENIOUS! Just stop spending our money so frivolously! Okay, ya got me there....its too late. Buy guns, ammo, food, water. Or continue to believe that "everything is gonna be okay". LOL. Its not.

Just take a look at some of the taxes/fees and other legislation O'Malley, Mathias/Conway are pushing for this session:
10 cent gas tax
higher fees for almost all MVA transactions
surcharge on electric use over 1000 kilowatt hours
trying to make farmland worthless with their septic legislation
trying to legalize pot
allow gay marriage
and so much more.

Just ask yourself how we from the shore can send any democrats to the legislature when what they want to do is so counter to what the majority of us believe in. But for whatever reason we keep sending Mathias and Conway back. Maybe we deserve what we get.

Its like when a fire destroys a woods and all the old growth is done away with the sun can now shine through again. The plants closest to the earth can thrive and build the woods back up again. A new beginning.

I don't like taxes, but if they don't find a way to start fixing these roads, none of us will have to worry about gas.

No one likes taxes. But as a trucker, I know first hand that Maryland truckers pay their fair share already. We pay an elevated fuel tax for diesel, we pay for apportioned tags, a federal heavy highway tax, and quite a bit more in tolls.

If they raise the liquor taxes like they are talking about, maybe they figure if the cost of gas is high too people won't drive to DE to buy alcohol to avoid paying more taxes on it.

In ten years 75% of your check will go to taxes. This system is not sustainable, it was a novel idea, but thats all it was.

Even better than posting here...email your elected whats-his-name, and tell them your opinion....if enough of us speak up, we can change things!
