UMES Backs Off Station 16 Plan

Firehouse purchaser wants to pursue hospitality institute with others in field

SALISBURY -- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore has officially pulled out of a plan to develop a hospitality entrepreneurial institute in downtown Salisbury.

Gains Hawkins, vice president for institutional advancement at UMES, said the university has been on the periphery of the project, and a select few faculty members have led the effort; however, "the rest of us, we've always been more out than in."
"We have too many priorities on the academic side to get involved," he said. "It's not going to be a good fit for the university."
For more than a year, the university has engaged in conversations with developer Palmer Gillis of Gillis Gilkerson Inc., who recently purchased the old Fire Station 16 on South Division Street for the purpose of housing the institute. UMES, however, merely showed interest in the project and never made an official commitment.

Were people deaf a month ago when UMES pretty much said the same thing?
Louise, Gary and Shanie just keep on looking dumber.

Oh Well! Looks like Gillis roadhouse is about to be a Reality.

UMES will do nothing unless it is free and a grant. Also UMES has one of the largest dope dealing rings on the shore.

"Also UMES has one of the largest dope dealing rings on the shore."

Do you have any facts to back that statement up? Of course not.

10:35 really? Your attempts to blindly malign the university just make you look simple.

Isn't one of those UMES associates who was driving this whole collaboration a friend of high-level City staffer? We wanna know.

10:23 - especially Shanie - wasn't it her at the last council meeting that went on and on and on about how she would approve anything if UMES had anything to do with it? What about it now Shanie, do tell us. If you would "listen" instead of run your mouth so much you wouldn't look so ignorant all the time.

UMES has a huge drug problem ask any Princess Anne cop ! You don't here about it because it's not reported unless someone gets shot.

Looks like LORA was on target all this time. UMES did have on their agenda a hands on facility TO SERVE THE PUBLIC. This would have put all area restaurants in danger. Selling to the public when they would be subsized their product and use students for little or nothing.,
Thank you LORA for having the insite to bring this subject to the taxpayers of Salisbury.
It a shame the Salisbury City Council did not see thru the wolf

in sheeps clothing.
It is also a shame to have Gary pulled out of his bed to vote on such a thing..I hope you two (Louise and shani) think it was worth it.

Thank you to Stewart Davis, of LORA, for attempting to bring this subject to the public.

LORA keep up the excelent work for ourcommunity.

UMES needs to focus more on their criminal student body who infect the lower shore towns like clockwork every year. Never have I seen a university with such a horrible group of "studens" in my life. Its a shame because the campus is beautiful and the programs are legitimate. However spending time in prison then enrolling at UMES seems to be the norm. Dr Holdens wife was just sentenced from stealing money from another university and it just so happens a large check was written to him. Students learn from teachers. Salisbury doesnt need to bring anymore UMES anything to our borders. Princess Anne is suffering from the crime rate which spikes during the school year and Salisbury certainly needs no more crime.

I hope this wiped the smile off of Gillis' face. I hope the building stays empty now that ole palmer is going to fork up the tax rolls for the building

Its true about UMES and crime / drugs. So many UMES students are either arrested for theft, drugs and other crimes in Salisbury and Fruitland. Just do some research and you will be surprised.
