Free STEM Saturday Classes Offered For Wicomico Students In Grades 4-8


Students who want to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) topics and careers should check out the STEM Saturdays classes that will be offered free of charge during the 2010-11 school year.
STEM Saturdays were a hit during the 2009-10 school year, and this year classes have been added for students in grades 4-5 as well as middle school. Classes this year scheduled for the rest of this year are:

Jan. 15:
Green Keepers: Going Green to Preserve Our World (elementary) and The Bug Detective (middle), both at Salisbury Middle

Feb. 12:
The Magic of Chemistry (elementary) and Out of Sight: Bringing Astronomy Down to Earth, both at Salisbury Middle

March 12:
Flying Wild: Bird Science and Conservation (elementary) at Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art
Fossils of the Chesapeake: A Hands-On Exploration (middle) at Parkside High

April 9:
The Bug Detective (elementary) and The Science Behind Winning (middle), both at Salisbury Middle

Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Please click on the attached flier to print, fill out, and return as directed on the form. Students may register for all of the classes, or only the ones that suit the student’s interests and schedule.

I wonder will the kids who could use this most be in attendance. Can someone familiar with these programs comment on the participation of students from the "wrong side of town".

kids from neighborhoods west of 13, south of 50. Generally a rugged "circle" around Naylor rd., church st., Brew river area, and outgoing 50west.

As a frequent outreach volunteer in the past, I was always frustrated by the fact that we would put together great programs to help the kids, but it was the kids who were already doing great that would show up while the kids you are really trying to reach would be absent.
