There were so many opportunities for fraud and misuse of money by workers in the Baltimore region of the state prison system that state auditors are asking the attorney general to look into possible criminal charges.
Auditors found an “almost complete lack of control and accountability” for the corrections region's working funds, uncovering included thousands of dollars in penalties for bounced checks, checking accounts out of balance by hundreds of thousands of dollars, and checks machine-signed by people who no longer worked at the department.

Its these kinds of things that get me angry when our politicians want to raise our taxes (or fees, fines, and levies). No matter where you look, at whatever government entity you choose, money is stolen, wasted, and "unaccounted for". So, just raise MORE revenue. That'll help. Congress itself wastes, steals and doesn't "account for" hundreds of millions of dollars every year. And many don't even bother with paying taxes. But they sure want to raise ours...yep. That'll help.
And what will happen to these people? Will they get to move to another prison system rather than be fired? (sound familiar) Will they go to jail? will this be swept under the rug? or the director get to retire? (land fill debockle sp). Do we re-elect people who oversee these things? When does government have to be just as accountable as private citizens? we save the same thing taking place in our own backyard! don't we?
