Feds Seize Websites Suspected Of Online Piracy

The U.S. government is shutting down websites suspected of copyright infringement or selling counterfeit goods as Congress debates a bill that would give feds more authority to do so.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an agency within the Homeland Security Department, has seized more than 70 websites in recent days, according to the Wall Street Journal, and posted a notice saying that the domain name has been seized by ICE through court-ordered warrants. The notice also states penalties for willful copyright infringement and trafficking in counterfeit goods.

Neither ICE nor Homeland Security responded to messages seeking comment. An ICE spokeswoman confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that the agency executed court-ordered seizure warrants against a number of domain names but declined additional comment.

"As this is an ongoing investigation, there are no additional details available at this time," she told the newspaper.

The beginning volley of government control of the internet. Look out, folks! They will use examples like this to grab dumb votes. Meanwhile, they know that we internet users already are wise to these scams and have software to defend ourselves! We do not need our dear gubmint to protect us here because we already have a FREE MARKET SYSTEM to give us those tools.

First alleged copyright infringement. Next they will call the exercise of the 1st amendment disorderly conduct, sedition, or treason, and they will seize blogs like this. It's bad enought to be owned by Red China. But to be like Red China? Be ready!

This is how the government gets its foot in the door.

Soon every aspect of the internet will be regulated and controlled politically to affect the views of the sheeple

I find it strange that ICE has time for this, but not to do the job of deporting illegals. Does anyone recall the fight over by-passing RICO courts over tapping terrorists phones?
Did ICE obtain a court order to confiscate these web sites? Is the protections provided by the constitution no longer valid? Is it any wonder that congress has an approval rate of 21.3% and 63.2% of Americans think the country is on the wrong track?
This indicates, to me, most Americans don't trust our government. Why are we surprised that other countries don't trust us? What surprises me, is that some do.

They are trying to control the last free exchange of information that isn't under government or corporate control. The internet was started based of the idea of the free exchange of information and marketing. This should not be given up without a fight.

George,
The internet was created by the military.

It has become our last resort for spreading truth about our government's crimes against humanity and the destruction of the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. However, they have monitored it and acted secretly through it the entire time.

Please look at the sites prior to making idiot comments. You guys would be begging for the gov. to do something if it was your art, intellectual property, or other creation being pirated on these sites.

It's scary how ignorant you people are. The law keeps foreigners from selling knock-offs from football jerseys to purses to cds and dvds. Like Canal st. In New York, much of the money spent here actually ends up supporting terrorism.

It's funny how the same people on here defended the right of the government to listen to other American's phone calls but God forbid the government stop the piracy of American goods.

Read an actual newspaper sometime and find out the truth...not just a fancy headline.
