73 days since Salisbury Safe Streets Legislation Introduced Still No Council Work Session
Mayor James Ireton, Jr. reminds the public, today, that 73 days have passed since he introduced the Salisbury Safe Streets Legislative Package. The package was introduced to the public and given to City Council on Monday, August 2nd, 2010. This means City Council has had 73 days to place this on a Work session agenda and Council President, Louise Smith, has yet to do so. Mayor Ireton urges the public, in the wake of the current wave of violence, to contact Mrs. Smith and demand that the legislative package get a hearing. The mayor has asked that the package have an up or down vote by Thanksgiving of this year.

After the debacle at Station 16 last night -- thanks to Campbell and Cohen -- Ireton's schemes are sone for.
I think after the hearing last evening, Jim, Terry and Debbie should drop the whole "mess". The public has spoken and disaproved the proposal. What purpose is served by wasting anymore time on it. If Jim is so gung-ho on this "legislative package", should he not be at the front of the room, instead of being in the back, leaving just a few minutes after arrival.

Ireton's non-performance last night was disgraceful. If he can't lead then he should resign.
Ireton's post-election support has dropped further and faster than Obama's.

I read the legislation online. I can see where the landlords are upset about the "amortization" and zoning board rules. But the rest, it makes no sense to me that they are kicking up such a fuss. If I was in their shoes, I'd use that "three strikes" bill to get the scum out of my property. If I didn't have scum in my property, why would I care about those who do?
The mayor didn't handle this as well as he could have, but I don't blame Cohen or Campbell for that. I think they've done a good job doing what their position allows them to do. They are the only ones who give a hoot what anyone thinks anyway.
Also, the "mix" may have been nice according to what the paper said, but I heard most of the speakers were the landlords' wives, husbands, kids, employees and tenants.
Doesn't sound like "the public" much to me.
Please resign Jim, you are hurting my city more than helping it.. The public has spoke against your legislation. NO MEANS NO. How many times do we have to say it.
After Jim Ireton as well as Debbie Campbell and Terry Cohen brought in an outsider to head the Salisbury Fire Department all three of them can go screw themselves. They continue to slap the taxpayers in the face with wasteful spending and wasteful policy. No outsider deserves to be put in a department head position when we have qualified candidates in house. I suggest we all call Jim Ireton and demand that he promotes within the Salisbury Police Department and the Salisbury Fire Department. Come election time those three stooges are going to have a hard time getting re-elected. Terry Cohen will be the first to go in the Spring election. We the citizens deserve better.
4@24 You must use Comegeynomics for math. Smith, SHields and Comegys would have put the fire guy in there. Ireton selected him. Did it occur to you that Cohen and Campbell can think about what's best for the city above and beyond the politics that so many are caught up in. They could have voted "no," but how would that have served the city well?
4:24, are you stupid? If the Mayor doesn't advance an internal candidate to the council, council members can't consider someone already in the department!
The one internal candidate submitted by the Mayor did not make it through. No one knows who voted for him and who didn't. Who knows if he was really in the running or not? Everybody else got submitted one by one. Not the fire chief candidates, 3 went in at once, so who knows which one the Mayor really wanted.
But you are going to blame Debbie Campbell and Terry Cohen, both having fought their butts off for your beloved firefighters.
Next spring, I hope Terry Cohen tells you and all the other ingrates to shove it and goes to a town with people who have IQ's above 30. She can race me out of here.
