Mayor James Ireton, Jr. reminds the public, today, that 58 days have passed since he introduced the Salisbury Safe Streets Legislative Package. The package was introduced to the public and given to City Council on Monday, August 2nd, 2010.
This means City Council has had 58 days to place this on a Work session agenda and Council President, Louise Smith, has yet to do so. Mayor Ireton urges the public, in the wake of the current wave of violence, to contact Mrs. Smith and demand that the legislative package get a hearing. The mayor has asked that the package have an up or down vote by Thanksgiving of this year.

All people interested need to attend the next council meeting. Salisbury crime is on the rise. The police can only do so much without support. The attendance of people will speak volumes.
This is ridiculous. Louise Smith needs to grow up or resign. If any of the laws Ireton proposed would help with getting the thugs out of here, then it is stupid and reckless to not be working on them RIGHT NOW!
Even if all of parts of the initiative need to be tweaked or ditched, they all deserve a chance at being debated in a public forum.
That Mrs. Smith won't allow this to come up for work session, let alone give it support, speaks to her failure as a representative of the people (all the people) of Salisbury.
Mayor Ireton can't set the council agenda, Mayor Ireton can't force a vote, and Mayor Ireton can't even speak at council meetings unless invited t. The ball is in the Council's court - the mayor has drafted legislation that can truly help. And rather than play ball, Louise Smith keeps calling time out.
Louise if you are reading this, you are the holdup for this legislation and you know it. You do not represent the people of Salisbury - we do not want all the crime in Salisbury that we are currently experiencing and it is in your hands to do something about it and you refuse. What kind of message do you think this is sending? Resign if you don't want to represent ALL the people, ALL the time.
