Incident: Sobriety Checkpoint
Date of Incident: 28 August 2010
Location: S/B Fruitland Blvd., Fruitland, MD
Narrative: On 28 August 2010 from 2300 – 0130hrs, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Maryland State Police, Salisbury Police, and the Fruitland Police conducted a Sobriety Checkpoint on S/B Fruitland Boulevard, south of Clyde Avenue. During the operation, 279 vehicles passed through. Of those that came into contact with Law enforcement, the following were either arrested or cited:
Cory Salemi, 19, Ellicott City, MD; Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
Jesse D. Allen, 51, Salisbury, MD; Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
Samuel A. Hopkins, 21, Baltimore, MD; Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
Patrick R. Mcauley, 21, Arnold, MD; Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Possession of Marijuana
Melanie Lynn Rosenborough, 20, Glen Burnie, MD; Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
Katherine L. Conner, 19, Fallston, MD; Underage Possession of Alcohol
Cory Brandon Cornish, 22, Fruitland, MD; Driving While Suspended
Additionally, two individuals were charged with Child Safety Seat Violations.

We are now living in a police state!
Ah yes, the young and out of control are back in town less then three days and and a handful are locked up already. When the S.U. officials say their students contribute so much to the local economy they were right. Attorneys fees, job security for cops, judges and jailers. You hand holding tree hugging liberals can have the college and the economic impact that they contribute. Give me Salisbury before the college expanded and I will be happy.

A police state, my foot. I live in a community terrorized by drugs, gangs, thieves and low down scum. Thank goodness Webster is gone and all police agencies are working together to get a handle on crime.
Crime was ignored for so long, first by the Sheriff Office and now we have a first class Sheriff and his deputies are held accountable and doing a fine job and then by Chief Webster. This office is not up to par yet but it takes time to take a broken down agency and rebuild it. Chief Barkley is a fine upstanding leader and he needs to be allowed to lead and get this department up to standards. MSP had been trying to handle too many situations throughout the county. When MSP and WCSO had not been allowed to participate inside the city for so many years, the whole county got the shaft.
And we should also congratulate Chief Phillips from Fruitland in being a package deal.
11:42 I agree with 10:47. You're entitled to your opinion and so are others. I don't want to be stopped for NO REASON. I have a right to freedom that should not be taken away by a POLICE STATE ideology. Catch those who break the law and leave the rest of us ALONE! There are people who would agree and some who would not agree with your opinion of local law enforcement too. Including some in the departments who won't speak out because of fear of retaliation. So, that leaves the hard core to be the majority of voices on the blogs. That does not mean the majority are happy.
11:42...your argument is weak. How does a neighborhood "terrorized by drugs, gangs and thieves" relate to the police stopping innocent drivers LOOKING for POSSIBLE criminal activity? Some history --- Germans CHEERED when the police killed gypsies by the thousands (get rid of those scum, no matter HOW you do it). Then it was the mentally weak. More cheers. Complaints about the methods and the law were drowned out by people JUST LIKE YOU who cheered the actions of the police and gladly gave up their freedoms under the laws. Then it was common criminals. More cheers from PEOPLE LIKE YOU. Then it was dissenters, who said "you are breaking the law doing these things!". They too, were imprisoned, tortured, and killed. Still more cheers. Then the Jews. Lots of cheers. Soon even Germans who had never broken the law became afraid. Maybe they were next.But it was waaaay to late for them to complain. Be careful what YOU cheer for, 11:42. Its a VERY slippery slope we are on. And sliding down fast.
"Catch those who break the law and leave the rest of us ALONE"? I think they did, Several times last night. As a Fruitland Resident who doesn't drink and drive, I think this is great. Do it EVERY Saturday night, and move it around.

All they have to do is put a patrol car at the corner of camden and ogle ave in fruitland on any Thursday, Friday , Saturday night and they could collect all the DWI and under age drinkers they want....they moved in thurdays and Friday night ...the State, County,Fruitland and the campus police showed up several people taken away in handcuffs..... that boy that lives on the oppose corners nice yard tore up????? If the police want a "target rich" environment, I would suggest Isabella St, Church St. Priscilla St. etc. Of course, the reason they (the police) like the "target rich" environment of the Nazi checkpoints they put up, is because DUI drivers don't shoot back or put up much of a fight. They just give up, pay the lawyers, pay the fines and pay the taxes. Which is the WHOLE point to it all. On Church St at 1 in the morning, its a different story. Ain't nobody "going down" easy there.

Well you see thats the thing, checkpoints are not about catching drunk drivers its about creating revenue, you think they're doing it to clean up the area?? PLEASE...you think that most cops really care about "cleaning up the streets"

Thats because they allowed people who were either drunk or just didn't feel like waiting to turn off onto Hobbs road. That was a total waste of money.

I agree,even though drunk drivers are a dangerous nuisance,they need to saturate areas like Dover St,Church St. etc.

You poor thing...I also have some personal experience in what a drunk/impaired driver can do to a family, but I didn't let my personal sorrow allow my judgment ot be so clouded. I imagine that if one of your family was shot by a robber while at the local 7-11, YOU would be okay with the government going house to house searching (without cause or warrant) for guns. And if the newspaper said something mean or untrue about you (or God Forbid!!! "one of your family members"), you want that paper shut down, huh? Its all about the money, 9:39. You can bet that those driver will be soaked to the bone by every entity involved, but they will be driving again next week...now give me some cheers for the judges and prosecutors you are you are so sympathetic to...
