WHAT IS JACOB DAY’S “EXPERTISE”?

In his post about Rick Pollitt’s latest appointee to Wicomico County’s Planning Commission, G. A. Harrison claims that Mr. Day – now approved by the votes of the Democrat contingent on the County Council plus RINO John Cannon – brings highly pertinent “expertise” to the Commission. Having just read Mr. Day’s resume, I respectfully disagree.

He has several academic degrees in fields that are tangential to land use planning, including “urban design” and “environmental policy”, and now works for a group that advocates for no growth and development outside of municipalities such as Salisbury (where he resides). But beyond those miniscule “credentials,” it’s NADA. Pollitt’s portrayal of Mr. Day as highly qualified is pure hogwash.

Mr. Day’s “expertise” consists largely of academic training. His other experience also is largely of the academic type – reviewing and writing articles and reports and advising about zoning and land use policy. Based upon the institutions involved, it is almost certain that his basic view of land use planning is that it should effect state centrist policy rather than local desires and preferences. Thus, he probably accords little or no value to property rights and fairness. To be sure, he is smart enough not to reveal his basic view or agenda when questioned in public.

Apparently Mr. Day is a nice person. Testimonials about such things as creating a memorial garden are heartwarming, but that kind of activity is no basis for appointment to the Planning Commission, nor is the fact that he is a “from here.”

It is apparent that Rick Pollitt – a career government bureaucrat who once performed “planning” in Somerset County -- is using the resignation of a moderate member from the more rural part of Wicomico County to pack its Planning Commission with members who dwell in the “metro core” around Salisbury and can be counted upon to support taking away development rights in the rest of the County. Because the City of Salisbury also appoints members of the Commission, Mr. Pollitt should appoint residents who live elsewhere. In addition, there should be at least one large scale farmer on the Commission; currently, there is none.

And Pollitt’s self-serving defense of Jacob Day as the indispensable person because of his supposed qualifications only adds insult to our injury.

Rick realizes that his democrat/RINO council will be a thing of the past after the election so is doing the dirty work now, while McCain, MacLeod, Sample-Hughes -- and John Cannon -- are available to assist in the screwing.

Anti-intellectualism from Joe Albero? What a surprise.

I agree 10:35. Typical attitude of many on this blog...scared of someone who may be smarter than they are...someone who dared to go on to college after high school. There is nothing wrong with "academic training", it's pretty commonplace these days Joe, and it makes sense.

10:26 and 10:35 if common sense is anti-intellectualism than sign me up. if standing up for people who want to do what they want with the land which they worked hard for and paid for without the interference from those who feel that they know better who have have had very little practicle experience is moronic and backwards then sign me up. this country really needs to get a life

Please. I love it when having actually studied a subject and gotten a degree is seen as a negative. The author should go back to school and take a basic logic course--so many assumptions and probablys in here.

I know Jake personally and I don't agree with everything that he has to say, but at least I have listened to him and his ideas. Maybe you should interview him personally and find out what he has to say before you disrespect him.

10:35 AM What Good is he doing or has done???.

Anonymous said...

11:21...first, he got a great education. Second, he came back home and is using that education to help out the community. He is also in the US Army, currently in OCS(Officer Candidate School). Here's an idea, take your time to know what you're talking about, before you follow the other mindless sheep.

Anonymous said...

11:21 he is young, intelligent, well meaning, with very little practical experience. wants to do right by the world. maybe in 15 years after dealing with the real world

I am sick and tired of you self proclaimed intellectuals calling people on the Eastern Shore a bunch of hicks and rednecks. The true of it is that you city folk just ruin everything you touch just like the beaches at the Cove and Roaring Point. You are truly the blind and clueless to us so called hicks.

I was just sitting here thinking about your statements Joe. I think you do a very good job of supplying us with a variety of news and I enjoy most of the posts. I wonder if I saw your credentials in news would you you quaitfy for the job that you do here on sbynews.com. Just a thought.

Somebody better get building some homes around here or all you will have left is a ghost town.

Anonymous said...

131-Why build more homes? There are no new jobs to support them, you can't just build homes and expect people to move here. Especially with no industry outside of pharmacies and retail stores.

1157-Yeah...people like me are what ruined the Cove. I've done more volunteer work picking up trashes on the beaches and at the marinas then most. You can call me a city folk, but I damn sure am not part of the problem. I know guys that EVERY week empty the trash cans down at the Nanticoke marina for FREE, because no one else will lift a finger when they start overflowing. I call em how I see em. Sorry, I have a bit of respect for a soon-to-be officer in our US Army, an a graduate of two of the most prestigious colleges in the world, a guy who's willing to give up the big bucks(by going to a larger city/municipality) to stay home and help the community. If the Good Ol' Boys weren't so shortsighted and looking to pad their own pockets, the towns on the Shore wouldn't have gone to such piles of s#%t.

anon 11:32 I have a great education from the school of hard knocks and being raised at a time when there was honesty, respect and most politicans were of a different breed. They cared about the people they served. He has a stigma about his beliefs and he needs to clear that up. However Pollitt and Cannon have lost my vote.Let me tell you another thing about OCS. They were the worst kind of officers after they were commissioned and stationed. Most of them had no Common Sense and they made serving under them miserable. Do as i say or else. Dont say more about OCS training. If he wants to be an officer have him enlist now. His education he has will grant him full commission in a real service branch. We use to call them. 1:31,
Really? You think we have a housing shortage? It doesn't take one of those fancy intellectuals that people seem to hate to figure out we have excess housing.

I am sick and tired of fruity come here's and mealy mouthed from here's who want to be accepted by fruity come heres telling us they dont want us to develop our land and they want to keep things in farmland but dont want to pay for it. Ifn all you MOH-rons owned a piece a ground instead of not havin two nickels to rub together because your all going on vacations to reHOe beth all the time or you aint got no money because your too busy stuffing your fat faces with expensive grown in california crucnhy granola organic food and your so darn fat you cant get outta the house, you might realize that ME telling YOU what you can and CANT do with your crackerbox house or tiny CONDOh aint right, and you wouldnt likeit, but lets jess get right down to it, the folks that want all this smart growth are the ones that own or have friends in the metro core, they are the ones that will realize profit from all this, and it will be at the expense of the farmin man

To 1:07: Nope. He wouldn't qualify to pick up your garbage.

Anonymous said...

Woah, Anonymous 2:01 clearly didn't actually serve anytime in the last 30 years. There is no such thing as a Direct Commission in the Army anymore with the exception of Chaplains, Medics and JAG Corps. Mr. Day can only go through OCS. Besides, what kind of soldier are you that you would insult another soldier on some blog? You're no longer welcome in my brotherhood if I find out who you are. I dare you to post your name here, coward.

I am embarressed to see what those who think they represent Shore natives have posted here. You do not speak for me. I am a Virginia Tech graduate, and I returned here to work after college because I love the Shore. I can be a "good 'ol boy" at times and I like a cigar and good glass of American bourbon. I hunt, fish and shoot. And I have a lot of redneck friends and I like it that way. But don't assume I will follow them when they put their ignorance on display like 2:47 above. I got over that kind of thinking in my teens and I am 57 now. The more I hear about Day, the more I like him. I have seen 90 percent of our hardwood forests cut down in my lifetime, clearcuts galore, and farm fields studded with houses that now stand empty. Pollution threatens our legacy like never before. Mr. Day, I welcome your expertise and I hope you can help preserve the Shore for those who know that, without protection, it will end up as one more very long strip mall. I applaud your credentials and thank you for your service to our country.

hear hear 6:18! I couldn't have said it any better myself.

Just remember all the come heres are going to run this Eastern Shore. So Slick Rick Pollitt start counting your loaf days down.November is a blink away u better be in good with your FruiteeLand buddies so u can get your job back.Comehere's Rule.

I agree with your position as a "redneck" with a MS degree that returned to the Shore for a better quality of life. I can drink Natural lights and shoot with the best of them as well as hold a meaningful discussion on gentrification.

Your post attempts to belittle the appointee's fine education and use it to make the reader fear what he might do.
You insult your readers' intelligence.

Frankly I don't know what the hell Jacob is doing accepting this job. He is a guy who could easily make 100,000+ a year elsewhere, and after the disrespect he's been shown here and elsewhere in the community, I would advise him to give up on this area and take his talents to where they will be appreciated.

Commenters above are suggesting "The School of Hard Knocks" is more valuable than a graduate-level education at OXFORD!

Jacob, you can't help the helpless.

Well now hey Tom Lee-O-nard

Since ahm jess a chicken fried marsh hound how about you get into a little specifics with me. You said

"I have seen 90 percent of our hardwood forests cut down in my lifetime, clearcuts galore, and farm fields studded with houses that now stand empty. Pollution threatens our legacy like never before. Now if I own 1100 acres of dirt and woods that has been in my family for generations while all your ancestors moved in town because you didn't like workin' for a livin, and you Mr. Le-O-nard now say I can't do what I want with my land, would you mind telling me how much in taxes you are willing to pay to compensate me for the priviledge of keeping my open spaces open so when you drive by in that black car that costs about 1/10 what my combine costs with your shiny tires and curb feelers and bomp bomp stereo goes by and your trampy tramp 3rd wife can look over and say how pretty and pastoral the eastern shore is while you trot your happy keester to the Wall marts to buy your china made crap that infests your home, just how much are you willing ot pay so that wife can say that?

Or are you just one of the people that live in the core that are hoping that property values go up when you STEAL STEAL STEAL my land and aserp my propierty wrights?

There's a lot of presuming going on here about Jacob Day's positions on matters and his future decisions.

Glad you folks can read minds.

If you use a high education as one of the reasons to immediately damn someone, you'd never have Terry Cohen on city council, one of only two who gives a damn what any of you think.

She's what they call an "Ivy Leaguer." She graduated in 3 years with honors too.

She could have gone anywhere and done great things, but she came back here. She's a "come here" too but has been around since high school. She takes a lot of abuse from dunces on the council and keyboard jockies in with the Daily Slime.

Maybe you guys could give this guy Jacob Day a chance to show what he's made of.

I've been here all my life. We got some great good ole boys and we got some that only care about their own wallets. We got some city slickers who think we're hicks and we got some great transplants who have done more for the area than some of the locals.

Our man Joe didn't write this. Doesn't sound a thing like him. Sounds like a Pollitt hater wrote it. A Pollitt hater with a college education too. Who says stuff like "state centrist policy"? Guess what? I don't like Pollitt either. But I'm not going to damn everyone he appoints just because Pollitt appointed them. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

You thought your post was funny. It was mildly humorous, but not for the reasons you thought. We're laughing at you, not with you. The sad part is, you can't tell the difference.
