Hurricane Earl may possibly affect those of us living on the Atlantic Seaboard this week. The intensity of hurricanes that will hit land is measured in terms of categories that relate wind speeds and potential damage. Even less intense storms can cause damage in areas that have not prepared in advance. Look over our reminders and prepare your family in advance. If you were not already prepared, there is still time to begin hurricane preparations for this week’s imminent storm.
Before
• Prepare your evacuation plan, including pets, transportation routes and destinations.
• Keep all trees and shrubs well trimmed; clear & loosen clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
• Determine how and where to secure your boat.
• Stay informed! Listen to a NOAA weather radio or check local forecasts and news reports regularly.
• Cover your home’s windows with pre-cut plywood or hurricane shutters. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
• Bring in all outside furniture, decorations, garbage cans, etc.
• Turn off utilities if instructed to do so.
• Turn off propane tanks.
• Avoid using the phone, except for serious emergencies.
• Fill the bathtub or buckets with water to use for cleaning and flushing toilets.
• Keep your gas tank at least 3/4 full at all times.
• Keep your emergency supplies kit, including water, and copies of important documents, in a waterproof, portable container, in an easily accessible location.
Evacuate under the following conditions:
• If local authorities tell you to evacuate, follow their directions.
• If you live in a mobile home or temporary structure, which are particularly hazardous no matter how well fastened to the ground.
• If you live in a high-rise building.
• If you live on the coast, on a floodplain, near a river, or on an inland waterway.
• If you feel you are in danger.
• If you live in an area below sea level.
During
• If you choose not to evacuate, stay indoors and away from windows and glass doors. Notify out-of-area contacts of your decision. Close all interior doors and secure and brace exterior doors. Keep curtains and blinds closed. Take refuge in a small interior room, closet, or hallway on the lowest level.
• Don’t be fooled by a lull in the storm—it could be the eye of the storm and winds could resume.
After
• Be aware of flooding and tornadoes.
• Stay out of flood waters, if possible.
• Stay away from downed power lines.
• If you evacuated, do not return to your home until local authorities say it is safe.
The Salisbury Fire Department encourages you to prepare now; make an emergency kit for your home in the event of a hurricane or any emergency. You can find an example of what should be in your emergency kit by going to HYPERLINK "http://www.ready.gov" www.ready.gov and looking under checklists.

Lets use the Katrina plan . Do nothing then blame Bush for blowing up the levees .
guess we got to the store tonight and buy everything in site.
WBOC has a heartwrenching story on there website: Salisbury Firefighters Recall Hurricane Katrina Devastation
However,,,,,, they fail to mention that the SFD wasn't deployed. They failed to mention that they were called and told to turn around. They Failed to mention that both Gordo and Little Gordo were along for the trip and neither were qualified to do anything. They actually requested PARAMEDICS, not FARMIN. They failed to mention that even Barrie Tilghman told them they couldn't go. They failed to mention that they brag about stealing gas this very day.
Joe you should post something on this and see the comments you will get.
The salisbury 9 are heroes
Everything 2:47 stated is true. Thanks SFD and Ireton for your preparation information but we already know what to do. Now take care of the storm that is and has been raging in this city for a very long time. Ireton, Hoppes, Gordy, Bragg, Louise, Comegys....leave the city alone. You people are the eye of a storm. Ireton, you and your boys at SFD trying to look good. Forget it. You've already done the damage!

Just wait till Ireton appoints his Baltimore City outsider as Fire Chief. It will be the same ole same ole with Gordo and Hoppes still running the fire department. The storm is brewing!!

I hope you are being sarcastic. The Salisbury 9 are theives. Not only did they steal gas, they stole their pay checks from the tax payers. They did nothing except snoop around down there. They weren't based at any camp, they were just freeloaders and freelancers.
The Salisbury 9 ? Laughable
Is it really suposed to be that bad i havent really been paying much attention to the news i really only read this to get news lol guess i should go check this out
*****GET THE FIRE BOAT OUT*****
Mayor Irenton's title should be corrected to Fire Chief/Mayor Jim Irenton. Guess he did do something right by putting this out himself. He did save the city 4 hours of comp time or the taking a unit out of service to handle important PIO work. Thanks for all you do.
Jim Ireton isn't qualified to be a fire chief, much less a Mayor. His days are limited as a school teacher in the Wicomico County School System.
Fire Chief Ireton doesnt realize that the fire department isnt ready for a hurricane diaster if it comes to town. What a joke.
Let the hurricane come. Id like to see if the new firehouse is really out of the flood plane.
Anon 2:47
Your dead on right. These clowns were told not to come, but kept going. Gordo and his idiots freelanced their way around and stole gas because they had no pin numbers like legitimate USAR teams had. This rag tag group slept at one of Gordos oilman buddy's house in airconditioned comfort with a pool. When they got home nobody cared and they still toot their own horn today. FREELANCE Bill Gordy. Thats what you are. You chastize firefighters here, but you are the main offender. Cant wait till your gone and take the Pirate with you.
Joe,
You need to open another separate story on Just the Salisbury 9. Good information is buried in this preparation story. As usual there is corruption with Gordy.

Joe I agree you should do a separate story on this. This is so important that the public should know the real picture. Jim Ireton knows about this and he must go since he is doing nothing about Gordy, Hoppes and Bragg. Bringing an outsider in is only making the problem worse. Please help us Joe!!
Yes they stole gas and don't let them tell you any different. If they were honest fireman they would have put it on their own credit cards and hoped to be reimbursed. Not only did they steal gas they stole wages from the city taxpayerss. The bottom line it they went down their uninvited and not wanted. They should be reprimanded and not praised. Take a look at the list of names and you will see a pattern. They are the good ole boys that suck up to Bill Gordy.
The Salisbury 9 is old news. If you want a story on possible corruption you should investigate the officers testing that the sfd just did. Momma says something fishy was going on at the study sessions...
Heroes ? What did they save ? They snaked around wherever they wanted and saved nothing. This was clearly a case of Gordy abusing SFD resourses. We wont even go into the salaries of the firemen. If any one of the officers or firefighters did anything like this theyd be fired or retaliated against. Its Gordy's way or no way. Freelancers as he calls them. Your a hero in your own mind. Fortunately the pirate didnt hang himself, since all the trees blew down.
leave the pirate alone. he is a busy man planning the next moves of the salisbury fire department. it appears all the career staff will become trained in special operations or lose their jobs. this training is not required of the volunteers equality at its best.
