Hes very naive about how the state and government function. Its not all his fault, he has no experience in politics. What he is saying is really what all politicians who have no experience say, “lower taxes results in increased spending and wealth”. His case about eliminating positions that are not filled because and that they are still funded is not correct. That means that we are paying phantom people that don't exist. While the positions may not be filled it's because many of them are frozen and therefore the money for those positions is reallocated to other areas. The entire economy sucks throughout the country. Some areas are hit worse then others. He makes comparisons to places with high tourist appeal also like San Francisco and Florida and therefore lowering sales tax would probably have a better impact on sales. We don't have that draw in Wicomico County. The bottom line is if you lower taxes, you lose government income. I understand and agree with cutting Government waste but there's a difference between trimming the fat and not cooking the meat.
@ 2:16 Wicomico County has no tourist appeal? If you get a chance some time check out the Dept. of Tourism's information. They bring a ton of people to this area - Poodle Club, Sports Tournaments, etc. We have a unique advantage here when it comes to events like this - we are close to the beach but don't have to pay Ocean City Prices.
I have a small business and I will tell you we are not spending, we are not hiring - due in large part to the high taxes we have to pay. If our tax burden was reduced we would be able to purchase more equipmen, hire more people that would then contribute to the economy.
2:16 -- go back and listen to what Dustin is saying. He's not comparing us to SF or Florida for tourist appeal. He was saying that the SF Federal Reserve bank put out a study showing that tax cuts have a large multiplier effect on economic growth. He was saying that rich Marylanders choose to live for half the year in Florida, where there is no income tax, in order to escape Maryland's high taxes. The points he makes are good ones. Taxes produce government revenue, but they do so at the cost of economic growth. If you want to help the economy, cut taxes, especially the corporate and income taxes.
As far as the unfilled positions go, Dustin makes a good point there, too. If the agencies need the extra money they are getting through the funds that are being paid to these nonexistent workers, then they should say that. Right now, though, they are getting money for workers that don't show up and using it as a slush fund. They can't justify any other use for this money, it seems, so they must make up workers so they can get it. Dustin is right that if the funding for these phantom workers was cut from the budget we'd save a lot of money.
Dustin certainly isn't naive about how state government functions. The fact that you have to distort what he was saying to attack him proves that.
