8th Grade School Dance

Hello Joe,

I'm Alex and I sometimes comment on you blog - usually in disagreement with you and your readers.

I never comment on local issues because I do not live on ES. I live in Baltimore County. I do however read some of your local news with 8th grade handicapped child news being the most recent story.

If you can find someone who is willing to part with their dance ticket. I will pay them double the price of whatever the ticket is worth. Whatever your commenters say about her mother being right or worng, the child simply wants to go to the dance. If you do find anyone, I will mail the money order payable to whomever directly to you. Just let me know price and address.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Alex

Very, very generous of you and if this is the way you live your life, you have a boat load of good karma coming your way! However, I think the tickets are specifically by student name and are non-transferable for the sake of disciplinary students not being able to do just this.

My challenge is that originally, the "rules" also said that students who had been suspended and/or had recieved 2 or more refferals also were NOT allowed to attend the Farewell Dance. At the last minute, those "rules" were "bent" and those students were then permitted to purchase tickets. Now, although that decision was made before the deadline of ticket sales, it was still a rule that was changed, and one that was changed for students that had disciplinary issues at one time or another. How fair is that?

Thank you for such generous offer, if the mom were able to purchase a ticket for 3X its original price, she would, so that her daughter could attend, but that is not an option.

it's a nice thought but i think they sell the tickets by name to keep track of who's going because they often have requirements like no. of office referals or no more than 1 "F" or something like that at least that's the way they did it when i went to bennett.

I know of people with tickets but that will be unable to attend. I suggested the same thing. However, the tickets have the purchaser's name on the back. Therefore, they are non-transferable. Nice thought though!

anonymous 4:46, sorry, I'm calling BS on this one.

4:46 is actually accurate. Some schools write the kid's name on the back of the ticket when it is sold to him/her; other schools use numbered lists. My daughter's school would have staff stationed at the door with a list of the kids who purchased tickets. When the kids entered the dance, they had to give their names to the staff to check against the list.

When I first read this, I understood the school's decision. But did feel the school could have allowed the student to purchase a ticket after the deadline. As long as the dance wasn't sold out. And that decision could have been justified to other parents (student with documented medical issues and out sick) as long as any other student with the same type of issue would be allowed to purchase tickets (how many could there be-after all).

After reading that the original rules were changed and kids who were not eligible to attend originally were now able to purchase tickets and go to the dance, then this student should have definitely been allowed to purchase a ticket.

To set the record straight, the rules weren't changed. Don't believe, ask the parents selling the tickets.
