I got a recorded message this @ about 8:45am that Seaford Middle was on lockdown & the State police were there searching all students & premises. I got a politically correct answer when I finally got thru to the secretary she gave a answer that almost sounded like the recording & said nothing happened just a practice exercise. I smelled the bull. I called the state police myself he told me it was a sweep for drugs. If you find out what happened can you let us parents know since the school can't tell me."

sounds to me like it was a "sweep for drugs" like they told you. nothing has to happen for them to do that. it has to be done at random otherwise they won't get anything. kinda like random drug testing at work. are you worried that your kid could get busted?
No you ass...my daughter is a 4ft nothin & weighs 80lbs soaking wet!! I was concerned for her safety & wondering why if there was this kind of problem parents hadn't been notified before now. Furthermore with all the stuff going at schools anymore it scared the dickens out of me!! What are your kids up to?
This was a legitimate question and 11:15am you must have nothing better to do with your time than to write sarcastic comments that are just ignorant and have NO value. As a parent, I would feel the same way worrying about my child's safety. Between pediatricians, teachers and coaches in Delaware, parents should be very concerned and KUDOS to the parent that is trying to find answers!!!
You should be happy they are doing a sweep. This could be key in keeping your daughter safe.
Quit whining about nothing. People damn the police for doing and then turn around and damn them for not doing.

If they had let the parents know, word would have gotten out and there would have been no point in doing a sweep, get it?
i agree with 11:15 to a certain extent: what would be the point of a random sweep if they told the parents in advanced?
I'm sorry the school didn't tell you when you called (especially since at that point the school as on lockdown) but you said the cops told you what was going on when you called them. Also, keep in mind for EVERYONE's safety, sometimes the police will not tell you everything until the situation (whatever that may be) is under control.

Not to mention all the covering up of anything negative about this area that happens daily. Ppl here live in ignorance, its not gonna change. Even if you know of something going on there are those that deny deny deny. Get used to it, its the norm on the shore.
Sounds like 11:44 is a little touchy. I think 11:15 must be hitting a little close to home.
To 11:15, your response is indictive of what's wrong with our kids (and parents) these days. No respect for anyone. When my kids' schools are on lockdown, I too would like to know what's going on. And to be a concerned parent, you don't have to have drug-addicted children, live in Section 8 housing, or be an ex-con either. You are extremely insensitive and should keep your rude insults to yourself.

i would be concerned too if i got that text message and then called the school only to get a cryptic answer as to why the school was on lockdown. i would then have done exactly what you did by calling the police to inquire. once i got their answer of "drug sweep" i would have left it at that and been thankful that the 'powers-that-be' are making some sort of attempt to decrease drugs in schools.
random, UNPUBLICIZED drug sweeps should be done more often, IMHO... it might decrease the # of times your daughter & everyone elses kids can & do come into contact with drugs.
i guess i was confused as to why you were still looking for answers when you said you already were told by the state police what was going on.
my reaction hasn't changed, but the "knee-jerk" way in which i worded it could have been better and for that i appologize.

Ok so I'm the concerned mom again. Thanks to those who have young kids & understand. To those that don't get where I'm coming from...let me try to explain. Can anyone please enlighten me to how bad the drug situation is or has to be in a school to need the police to come in & put the school on lockdown to do a sweep? If it is just a random locker check isn't that handled by the school officials? If this was just a random check why is this the first I have EVER heard of one in this school? Oh & this is my youngest of 3 children... none of which have ever been in ANY trouble other than chewing gum in class. My oldest graduated this year.
To those of you that can't understand why a parent would be concerned - shame on you. Find another place to "bully" people. Us parents must stick together and look out for our children. AGAIN, this was a legitimate question and if you don't have anything good to say, do us a favor and shut your mouth. This is what is wrong with the world today - too many smart asses and no one with REAL answers!!!
I have been out of high school for 10 years and they were doing them then. They bring in K-9 dogs to sniff for the drugs that way locks don't have to be broken for random locker checks. Every locker is checked by the drug dog. The kids are on lock down so 1.) they can't go get the drugs out of their lockers if they have them and 2.) To keep parents from saying their child was exposed to a dog trained to attack. I completely agree with the random drug sweeps and not letting parents know until it is happening..gives the cops a better chance of finding drugs that way. The drug problem amoung school age kids is bad, has been bad, and will always be bad. At least knowing they may be caught during drug sweeps may limit how many kids show up to school with drugs to offer your daughter.
I've been out of school for 15 years now and like 3:09pm said, they were locking down schools and bringing in drug dogs to search cars and lockers then. Usually it wasn't an ordeal, classroom doors were closed to keep anyone from wandering the halls and allow the police dogs to do their job.
Just a thought, but they also wouldn't tell the parents because some of them maybe the ones supplying their kids with drugs to sell in the schools. Also, when they do these drug searches and put the schools on lock-down un-announced, it is a really good practice run for students and teachers.
Just like fire drills schools are required to have practice lock downs and things like this.

I don't work in the Seaford School District, but I'm sure it's the same there as it where I work. During drug sweeps, which do not happen that often, it is standard to have the school on lockdown. This is so kids, staff, and visitors are not hurt by dogs.
I believe the principal is notified only within a very short time frame that the lockdown will be occurring. Right before the police enter, the school will go into a Code Yellow or Red. It is up to the principal (usually) if he/she wants to do a full Code Red and have students/staff go to their designated safe places. Usually during a drug sweep, doors are locked but instruction is allowed to continue. Additionally, sometimes the office is allowed to answer the phones and sometimes (as in a Code Red) they are not.
If the office is allowed to answer the phones, the office staff is instructed to say a very specific message, sometimes with a script being provided. And even though the Code yellow/red was called for the drug sweep, as far as the staff/students are concerned it IS a practice drill.
Where I've been, that is what we did. However, once it was OVER, we were able to say it was a random drug sweep. There was also a notification sent home to parents with more details.
I hope this gives you a little more answers. I'm not sure why you were not given any follow-up information, but since your original message was posted at 10:49 AM, you may have received a note sent home with your child or a phone message.
As a parent I get nervous when I hear the word "lockdown." My daughter's daycare was on lockdown one afternoon due to a bank robbery nearby as a precaution. Kids are nervous about it these days because they are not told why they are on lockdown and of course they think the worst like there is a gunman in their school. It is sad what our world has come to. And there have been numerous bomb threats in DE schools recently which is cause for concern. Sometimes schools try to cover things up. I understand the need for the drug sweep but as a parent I would have wanted answers too w/all the school violence and terrorism. That is what being a good parent is about...being concerned about the welfare of your child and what is going on at the school and getting the correct information. I commend this parent. Those making negative comments need to get a job or a life!
to 10:05 pm all she knows is the police came in with the K-9 & she thought it looked just like our dog at home...she thought it strange but seemed to be ok (especially since the dog looked like ours) she said ...locker checks & desks & bookbags etc were sniffed the cops talked to the kids for a bit & the "lockdown" went on for a couple hours.
After she left the room I talked to my 15 yr old daughter who said she heard about it...we both knew all kinds of things happen at the high school but usually only if there has been trouble. She did say she heard that at least one boy was found with weed. I hope maybe they will send us out a note home with the kids or an e-mail to let us parents know how bad this problem is at just a middle school leval.
I tell you it's so discouraging with the news & everything these days...it just makes you want to go off to the middle of the wilderness & take your chances with the critters!!!
