Tin Man Customs Closing Their Doors

I was notified yesterday that my brothers place of business was closing (Tin Mans Customs on Nanticoke Road). The economy has had a toll on his company this past year.

I will miss the place because of the many things he carried , sporting goods for fishing and hunting, small grocery line, beer and wine and Custom motor cycle work.

He did well until this last election and then down hill, I won’t give my opinion about the political impact on his business. Of course Bush will get the blame for people going out of business. Anyway, just thought you would be interested to know that another business will be gone.

Respectfully,

Wayne Earp

Really? You're going to blame it on politics? Really? I live in Nanticoke. He went out of business because stuff was old, stale (especially cigarettes), and he didn't have much selection on normal everyday stuff. That is why the little general store / deli about 5 minutes up Nanticoke Road in Nanticoke is thriving out there. You need to sell what the people want. Sorry, there isn't much daily need for guns, fishing supplies and bike accessories. Business 101 : Supply and Demand.

Thanks to all of our supporters, it has been fun times. In our defense I would like to state a few facts. First about the cigarette comment, we purchase cigarettes every week, a very small amount as we only sell 5 different brands. I doubt that they were ever stale, but if they were, all it would take would be...hey I bought these and they are bad, we would of appreciated that and you would of got your money back. Second, we decided to continue the sporting goods business because everyone knew Dave's as Dave's Sport Shop and the demand was sporting goods when we opened, so that is what we supplied. I also feel that politics HAS had a major impact on our business. Maybe not current politics but all the regulations that Maryland has in place does affect gun sales. Supply in demand, sure that is what retail is all about, you sell what people want. With the ecomomy we aren't able to keep up with the supplies for their demands. THAT IS WHY WE ARE CLOSING. Lastly, we were to trustworthy. Most of the time when someone ordered something from us, we would ask for a deposit, if they didn't have it, then they would pay when the item arrived. That backfired on us, we got screwed too much, we ordered a brand new Remington Rifle for a customer that his wife HAD TO HAVE in two days, so we rushed the order, then we never heard from him again. Not to mention the bad checks and tabs that people won't pay back.

So please keep your negative comments to yourselves, our REGULAR customers that supported us know that they could always tell us anything be it positive or negative, then we would work it out.

So again, thank you to all of our supporters. We have made a lot of new friends since we have been opened, and had some good times. But we have faith that good times are still ahead and we will get through this.

I've never been to the store and don't know the proprietors, but it's ironic that Wendy wants freedom from regulation, but she doesn't want freedom of speech. Keep your comments to yourselves????

The economy has played a huge toll on everyone. I recently just closed my store in Salisbury due to the economy. It was a battle we could not keep fighting.
So sad to hear yet another local business has been a factor of the state of the economy.

11:51: Oh come on, this is a blog, for sure neg comments are gonna be posted, that is just a fact of life, some people are positive some are negative, I choose to see the positive in everything. Of course I respect people's freedom of speech. I just find it funny that people wanna share the bad stuff without giving us a chance, or trying to help us out. What we don't know we can't fix.

Another American family owned business gone under is never good news.Eventually there will be no one left working to pay into the welfare coffers, then what? We give free phones to people who wont work so why cant we give some sort of aid to AMERICAN owned businesses who provide jobs?I am very sorry to hear this.

It's OK Bluto, not to worry.

Obama has the Treasury Presses going 24/7 and they're printing money as fast as they can just for the Unemployment Office.

There's a bright side to all of this. Look at the cotton, paper and ink industries. Obama has them rocking and rolling!

Sorry about the business Dave and Wendy. You are good people , meet you at the pass.

Since we said we are closing, we have sold all of our handguns, except a Ruger Mark III, and we have a few rifles/shotguns...make us an offer we will work with you. As far as other inventory...name a price. Still have quite a bit of hunting and fishing accessories in stock.

Also, since the post I've gotten so many calls about our Pignic, sadly we won't be doing it this April. That is a shame because that was a great get together and such a blast!

When are you closing? I still have a frequent shooters card I would like to use.

So many negative comments here. The struggling economy is having a major effect on many small businesses, and the large conglomerants make it difficult for the small man to survive.Hats off to Tin Man for giving it a try and best of luck in your future endeavers.Whats will become of Muddy Hole Pizza ??

Muddy Hole Pizza is gone already.

I have to wonder if anyone has any statics as to how many of the small american owned businesses have closed and how many of these small conviences stores NOT owned by americans have closed. Is the burden of what we have to pay as americans whats making these businesses close?

Anonymous said...

sorry to see ya go! always stopped in there. very nice people, for all those making negative comments, you are wrong to say bad things about these people! they were always very polite and helpful!
hopefully when something happens to you others will be wating to give you what you deserve! what goes around will come around!
Maryland sucks bigtime for small business!

Obama is all about helping out BIG BUSINESS, Wall St. Banks, GM, Chrysler etc. He, Pelosi, Reid and that ilk don't give a rats ass about the mom and pops that have been the backbone of this country. We now have government banking and goverment motors, that is just the beginning of this socialistic path we are racing down.

Dave and Wendy, I'm sorry to see you go. I've been where you are now. Good luck to you.

I like how you wanna be ignorant and not leave your name. You are a coward. I guarantee anytime you have walked through their door you were treated with kindness and left with a smile on your obnoxious face.
Wendy
Everyone knows you all are awesome and anyone who thinks differently is just jealous of your family unity and good times. They are more than likely miserable in their own lives and can't stand to see anyone happy. I love you guys dearly and I am sadden to see the store close but I cant wait to see what new adventures lol the future brings us. see ya later

Since Obama came into office, I started to see my business slowy drop in sales each month. By the end of the year, I came out barely making a profit and up until then for the past 20 years, I did very well!
Does that tell you something? Obama sure is not helping me out and oh yes, all those changes he promised. He certainly changed the way small business owners survive - he basically killed them!

Dave did some powder coating on my bike. Great service, great job. Best of luck to you with whatever comes next.

Get out of here with your supply and demand.10:20 probly doesnt have a job like the other half of Nanticoke. In this economy there is no S&D . The Earps are some of the greatest people on the westside. Dave worked all his life to have something like this. Dont be degrading at the time of someones business departure. Its never good when a business closes. I went in business when I was 19 and you have to own a business to understand what it takes to stay above water in this economy. People that work 9 to 5 jobs , if the still have there job, have not seen a differance. Think about it, if you have the same pay you always had then your fine. Run a business that you know how to run for 10 or 15 years and have it riped out from under you like the rest of us. Dave is a business man and without people like him there are no jobs.Everyone would work for the gov.,fastfood or walmart. So 10:20 write this comment down so that you understand why your welfare check has stop coming.Dave and Peggy, hats off to you for making home town life even that much better. Your a great family and great friends to me and mine.

Dave
