Almost 5 percent of aging Baby Boomers in the United States are abusing drugs, a new government report shows.
That's about 4.3 million adults over the age of 50 who are smoking marijuana, abusing prescription medication and engaging in other illicit drug activity -- a number that far exceeds that of their parents' generation.
The driving force behind the trend, said Peter Delany, director of the Office of Applied Studies at the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), is people who used drugs when they were younger and never really stopped.
This is, after all, the era of the Rolling Stones as senior citizens.
One might wonder about their political persuasion-- drugs might help to explain what's happening to our country.

helllllooooo ... the study found only 5% still using, and you somehow want to connect the state of our union to this group? this i gotta hear, please continue
I would LOVE to see a random drug screen done on all elected officials, and the results made immediately public.
I wonder what happened to the idea of freedom? Oh, that's right: freedom is for you to impose your morals and beliefs on those who do not believe.
I wonder how many of those 5% are productive, contributing, respected and upstanding citizens of the community? I'll bet $1 to a doughnut most of those 5% are helping our community prosper and contributing in a positive way to its character.
I'm a productive and taxpaying member of our community, and you'd know me if you saw me. Almost everybody in my social circle smokes a little weed from time to time, and they all work, have families, pay taxes, own homes. the whole thing. Why something that can grow wild is illegal and cigarets and alcohol are not is amazing to all of us. I'd be shocked if it was ONLY 5% that smoke pot recreationally.
EVERYBODY is on drugs.
take this magic pill because your all-American diet and "grown-up" aversion to play has transformed your heart into a turd. take this magic pill because you're depressed you're overweight, out of shape and hate your job. take this magic pill to forget you're on the anti-depressant. if grandpa can take a pill to give him an erection, folks should be able to legally seek out other ways to expand their consciousness other than the two worst LEGAL drugs: tobacco and booze.
it's the untaxed drugs that irk the squares. forget drug testing, demand IQ tests for jobs.
"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat."
-Genesis 1:29
Keep the faith folks, now pass that jay.
I suggest you consider going back to the article you got this information from and taking another look at it.
I've seem this information posted in many places on the Internet. It incorrectly states that seniors and boomers are the same age group.
Boomers were born between 1946 and 1964. The older boomers are turning 64 beginning in January of this year. Boomers aren't seniors yet.
The article uses the terms boomer and senior interchangeably. This isn't accurate.
In addition, boomers don't like to be referred to as seniors. As they get older, they'd like to be referred to as boomers.
