Yes, he has done the right thing. when you look at the numbers of turnover rate from the previous police officers, the crime rate, and unsolved crimes well that answers itself. I understand that it takes awhile to close some cases because of the lengthy investigations that some may take, however when you never see the police chief at any major crimes PERIOD that dosent help matters either rgardless if you have sufficient commanders on scene look at the big picture when the man in charge shows up on scene not only does the officers think to themselves hey this is great but the citizens might actually think the chief cares. Mike Lewis knows he does not have to go to every call, but Mike also knows that his experience and ability to do the same may offer further assistance in solving that crime. You know you have a real leader when they get the phone call that a serious crime just occured while you were home with your family and the on scene commander tells you we have the suspects detained and you still get dressed and go to the scene and personally congratulate and thank your men and women for doing a great job and then a shooting occurs at the same time and you respond code to the scene w your deputies to assist. This happened the nite of the shell station shooting by Courtesy Chevy. You know what else is sad during the past 10 years each officer that has graduated the police academy walked across stage and saluted a chief that has yet to where the uniform, i know this for a fact because myself and many others have walked the same stage and seen it for ourselves, yet Mike Lewis wears a uniform everday to include a full duty belt and makes traffic stops and handles calls for service not because he has to but because he wants to. I think that sums it up.
Absolutely, now he needs to put Webster on administrative leave and appoint someone willing to work with our allied police agencies as Chief, and demonstrate to the public that help is truly on the way, and how different management can make a difference!
Yes , but the question still remains , can he be fired? That arrogant SOB needs his a$$ kicked. I don't think people realized that he didn't have any real police work under his belt when he was hired. He doesn't have any experience in the work that he is in charge of. Of course , that's very obvious now.
No! The will of the people is to FIRE Webster, not "ask" for a resignation like a pansy would do.
Jim Ireton promised change and that is why we elected him. He promised that all department heads would re-apply for their jobs. He told us Webster, Pick, Oland, Chambers, Hoppes and Gordo would go. Jim, you are toast in the next election.
No....Ireton has done nothing to work with the cheif, and the same goes the otherway, thet BOTH need to grow up and do the right thing for salisbury......p.s they both should be required to be salisbury residents...????
Mike G, Unlike Webster, Ireton lives in the city--in fact, he lives in one of the more dangerous parts because he is trying to be part of the revitalization.
Because of his contract, the chief can only be fired when requested by the mayor and then supported by a majority (3) on the council. Seems to me the mayor better learn the fine art of behind-the-scenes negotiating since it appears using his current tact he'll never have the majority vote of the council needed to fire the chief.
No, I think that the town has to get together first and work with what they have and then look to restructure. The answer is not to fire this one or ask that one to resign but to work together to make salisbury a safer place to live.
I think the correct description of what is happening is that the Mayor made the correct decision to replace Webster because, 10 years into the Chief's tenure, the crime is getting worse in the city. Even worse, he doesn't appear to even have a strategy to improve things. This justifies replacing Webster with someone more capable to bringing down crime.
I don't know if the Mayor has the power to fire the Police Chief (does he?). If he does, it is very generous of him to give Webster the opportunity to resign and keep his resume clean.
No, I think that the town has to get together first and work with what they have and then look to restructure. The answer is not to fire this one or ask that one to resign but to work together to make salisbury a safer place to live.
11:20 AM
You liberal morons need to get a grip. There is no working together on this. Webster has been incompetent from day one. He also publicly attacked the mayor elect during the election so I fault Jim Ireton for not getting rid of him the day after he got sworn in.
Yes. If he can't be removed, can we rewrite his job description? Let's call it restructuring. Then we will create a new position over him. Then we will let Mike Lewis step into that position for a while where that bald headed a$$hole has to take instructions from Mike. Then we go to the state and ask to eliminate SPD and combine both departments. We all need to start turning up the heat on the council members as well. We all need to start calling their offices and demanding that they vote to remove this jerk.
yes Salisbury fired a perfectly capable police chief to hire this admin. flunky he does not have a plan or demonstrate leadership for our police dept.! Just look at his track record and then ask yourself would a private sector administrator be allowed to have poor performance for 10 yrs without being fired???
It was certainly the right thing to do, BUT if he says "No", you are in the postion of trying to fire him. With the existing Council's stated positions he will not be able to accomplish this. Then it becomes a matter of saving "face" or finding a way to work around the Council.
I do not think that once webster is gone, the crime will stop. Get to the route of the problem of the Crime, Then when that is taken care of Clean house
Hell yes it's the right decision, but what if the councils{Three Stooges}say keep him ? Then I suppose we put up with Webster acting even more pompous than now !!! He can't afford to quit, who would hire him based on his performance as Salisbury chief.
He needs to go! Did he have a contract or so something. I live in the county. He is not an elected official like Our sheriff is so why can't he be fired? I am dumb on this one.
He thinks he's too good to wear the same uniform that the people who do all the work there wear. What does it say that he doesn't even want to live in the same city he is supposed to be protecting? The only chief Salisbury has ever had who didn't live in the city. How long does his contract run or is open-ended? Send him back to his private barstool at Seacrets, the stool that probably has his ass-print embedded in it by now.
I wish everyone would stop wishing this mess on Mike Lewis. He was elected Sheriff of the county, who knows if he would even want to inherit this mess. Has anyone asked? Are you all saying he doesn't have enough to do? Salisbury needs to have their own effective PD. The city has allowed Chief Webster to become an ineffective leader. If Webster was smart enough to have a contract written that makes him untouchable, maybe he is a lot smarter than most of you give him credit for. I say a probationary period of maybe six months to show a substantial decline in violent crime or termination for inadequate job performance follows. This would be presented to council for approval and would HAVE to be accepted by all members. This would get the results everyone is looking for, either crime would go down, or the chief would be fired.
Yes. The man (and I use that term loosely) should be run out of town on a rail. While we're at it, let's run Bubba out right behind him. Finally, common sense and literacy should be made requirements for City Council members. That would get rid of Shanie Shields.
Yes, it's the right start because if the chief did put the city first for a change, it would save us all the drama of the council b.s. (Comegys, what a phony, pretending to want to help, but staging a show instead.)
I am disgusted by the focus Chief Webster had on the quest to ruin Debbie Campbell. I don't care if it was Campbell or Kermit the Frog. There was no crime. It was all b.s.
Meanwhile, people got hurt and dead. Their blood is on his hands as far as I'm concerned.
Just my opinion, and it should count for something.

Very much so.
Absolutely, now he needs to put Webster on administrative leave and appoint someone willing to work with our allied police agencies as Chief, and demonstrate to the public that help is truly on the way, and how different management can make a difference!
Hell yes
Yup, and if the chief doesn't resign he should be fired!

YES, there is no daught in my mind.
YES!!!!
YES, get him out... Seeing how he won't leave, its up to the council to make him leave... They won't tho...
Yes I do. However, I would have preferred it to be a demand.
yes, but Iretom should resign too. He's a little boy trying to do an adults job.
Yes , but the question still remains , can he be fired? That arrogant SOB needs his a$$ kicked.

Mike G,
Unlike Webster, Ireton lives in the city--in fact, he lives in one of the more dangerous parts because he is trying to be part of the revitalization.
On the poll question, I say "yes."
YYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS
I thank the Mayor for finally making a tough but absolutely necessary call. As for Webster, please save your reputation sir and resign.
Yes. If he refuses to resign then fire him. He is ineffective as a leader and crime in Salisbury has been on the increase since he has been chief.
KJT
Yes absolutely ! Now he needs to move on to other troubled departments like public works with the same attitude and get Salisbury back on track.
Without a doubt YES!!!! Now it's time to proceed with the process to fire the lazy bastard.
Because of his contract, the chief can only be fired when requested by the mayor and then supported by a majority (3) on the council. Seems to me the mayor better learn the fine art of behind-the-scenes negotiating since it appears using his current tact he'll never have the majority vote of the council needed to fire the chief.
Absolutely, positively, YES!
YES, and if Mr. Arrogant Chief won't resign, FIRE HIM.
YES, Please oo please. All I want for christmas is a new police chief, a new police chief, AAAA NEW POLICE CHIEFFFFF!!!
Completely.. 100%.. without reservation.. YES!!!!!
Hell Yeah! I'll help Webster pack up his desk.
yes....it's a no brainer
No, I think that the town has to get together first and work with what they have and then look to restructure. The answer is not to fire this one or ask that one to resign but to work together to make salisbury a safer place to live.
yes
No. Only because he should have just fired him. See you Chiefy!
Yes! The mayor finally got a set. I'm sure he has to ask him to resign before he can fire him
Yes. Webster is not fit for the job.
Yes, the Mayor did the right thing. Thank you.
Finally, yes!
next Jim-beau will ask Chiefy "pretty please".
Imagine if Harry Truman had tried to handle "Dugout Doug" like this during the Korean War.
Anon 11:20 Chief Webster won't work with anyone so how would your suggestion work? Webster isn't even human, as K would say, he is a Ballchinian.
He needs to be suspended, investigated along with a few others, then fired.
Absoluely! Webster needs to go.
Yes
Yes, It's time for a change

He has had 10 long years to work with anyone and everyone. He DIDNT
He needs to be FIRED and the sooner the better.
Oh dear God--yes!
Joe, if this comes to pass, then what? hire a "local" or hire an "outsider"?
Demand he wears Police Uniform while he's on duty like the rest of his men, that aught to make him quit.
No, The Mayor was forced into this decision.

"then what? hire a "local" or hire an "outsider"?"
I don't see this a primary priority but rather finding someone capable of making a believable case that they can do something to reduce crime.
~either one is probably good. The big thing probably is so long as they are removed from local politics~
It all looks like a big game to me. I just wish we had a better police chief.
Ireton began nice by giving Webster the opportunity to leave with his head up. Now get he should get nasty and fire him and have him escorted out.

WOW,nice to see such good responses. As a current LEO and a former SBY City Police Officer I say "OFF WITH HIS HEAD", and don't look back.
dp
I have nothing personal against Allan Webster but I think it's time for new blood in there. So Yes.
Yes
HELL YES!!!!!!!
There has been sooo much time expended on this bullsh!t. It's should be done already!
Wow, this is the 1st sign of support I have ever seen anyone give the Mayor on sbynews.
Resignataion is the easy way out. FIRE him. Make his life hell after SPD
Yes,
We need the WBI to take over the force with either another Chief or delete the position and put the force under Mike Lewis.
He needs to go! Did he have a contract or so something. I live in the county. He is not an elected official like Our sheriff is so why can't he be fired? I am dumb on this one.
YES!!! But dont see it happening!

YES, YES, YES, YES, YES YES.........and not soon enough!
ABBA-Salutely!!!
C-YA!!!
The chief doesn't like Salisbury or he would live here. He would do himself a favor to resign and become active in Somerset. YES
Yes, it's the right start because if the chief did put the city first for a change, it would save us all the drama of the council b.s. (Comegys, what a phony, pretending to want to help, but staging a show instead.)

You bet your sweet _ _ _.
Yes, it's never too late!!!
Yes, absolutely. Unfortunately, I don't think he'll get the support from the council... but here's hoping!
OK, now it's 100 comments.
At the very least I think that Chief Webster should be Vice President of United States or get the Nobel Peace Prize.
He has done as much for Salisbury that Obama has done for the country...
Yes and bring in Chief Lashley from SSU to take over.
