Confirmed: Buy Insurance Or Go To Jail

'This is ultimate example of Dems command-and-control government'

A Michigan congressman has released a report from the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation confirming that the House Democrats' health-care bill could impose penalties of up to $250,000 in fines and five years in jail for failing to buy the proper insurance coverage.

"This is the ultimate example of the Democrats' command-and-control style of governing – buy what we tell you or go to jail," said U.S. Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich.

"It is outrageous and it should be stopped immediately," he said today.

The letter of confirmation from the Joint Committee on Taxation was signed by Chief of Staff Thomas Barthold. His analysis confirmed individuals who fail to follow the rules actually could be penalized both with civil and criminal punishments.

"The Code provides for both civil and criminal penalties to ensure complete and accurate reporting of tax liability and to discourage fraudulent attempts to defeat or evade tax," Barthold's letter said. "Civil and criminal penalties are applied separately.

This may be the start of the next civil war. The government has gone against the will of the people and has forced socialism down our throats! They didn't listen to the protest's in the town meetings or the letters and phone calls that were given to protest this insanity! The branches of liberty need to be pruned!

People use the medical system everyday who do not pay. That loss gets pushed over on everyone who does pay. I am glad to see some teeth in this so people cannot opt out of insurance like they do now.

It's not about opting out, it's about being able to afford the insurance. The poor will always be with us and they will simply not be able to pay for this insurance even with subsidy. I guess we know why the feds want to build a new prison in somerset county, they will surely fill it up with poor people that can't afford insurance. Real criminals HUH.

The long term goal for this administration is obviouse. Its not about "health care now" its about health care later in 2012 and after. You can't kill the economy or the dollar without having a universal health care in place. It would be a complete disaater. This way you can destroy America in a controlled fashion. If this were not true why then would the government not work on the economy first? The economy is not hard to fix its acually harder to destroy and they are well on thier way.

Aren't you compelled to buy car insurance? No complaints there. What's more important care insurance or health insurance?

I remember hearing conserves previously whining about how people would rather buy Nikes than buy insurance and then the public is stuck footing the bill. So under this law you have to buy and you guys still B- and moan. Just like drunk driving, tax evasion, or selling drugs, the consequences of not having insurance affects us all.

9:54 They find the money to buy cigarettes, new cell phones, big trucks then they whine they cannot afford insurance.

11:25 your argument holds no water. You can choose not to drive and your requirement to have auto insurance is gone. Also, there is no constitutional right to drive a car.

We are a working class, two income family that can't afford health insurance at the current rates. Sure we have a cellphone, but that doesn't cost $300+ per person per month. And our auto insurance doesn't even cost that per YEAR. Unless the government is going to regulate the cost of health insurance so that the big companies stop gouging the american people, we will never be able to afford it. I'll gladly go to jail under their plan, that way my medical coverage - along with room and board - will be free! GREAT plan!
