As we await this morning's Daily Times - which is rumored to be running either a defense of explicit content in elementary school library books, or a hit piece on Wicomico councilman Joe Holloway, or both - let's examine yesterday's relatively balanced piece by DT reporter Greg Latshaw. Wicomico schools superintendent John Fredricksen seems to be spinning in multiple directions.

WCBOE Still Dodging "Dirty Books" in Schools

Joe Holloway has broken the law himself. Photocopying copyrighted material is against the law. Mr. Holloway displayed these illegal copies in a Council meeting. It is a travesty when our elected officals have no knowledge of the most basic of laws. Why did this parent run to Holloway instead of bringing the problem to the attention of school officals? Is Joe trying to win re-election when most Council members will be very unpopular in this time of severe budget cuts? If I'm him, I tell the parent to contact the school and if her concerns aren't resolved, contact me and I'll take care of it. Instead Joe decided to be a hero to the children everywhere and wound up breaking the law. Mr. Holloway, you broke the law and I am calling for you to step down ASAP.

This is how he is. He says one thing and lies to ur face then does another. He does it all the time. He could care less about our kids. and the book. ha.. he more than likely has a copy (would not shock me) He does NOT need to be in charge of our children. You know this new Bullying crap that was sopposed to be in place to protect our children??? They lied.. they are still working on it. They could care less that our children are getting beat up everyday in school either. You people better wake up and get this man removed for the BOE and get someone in there that likes kids. Their are only 2 schools in wico co that are good. the rest of them are out of control. And yet he could care less that our kids are faced to enter these schools the way they are..Bullying...Porn..what else will the so called Dr allow??? whats next???

Does the County Executor not have the power to fire him. Where does Rick stand on this immoral concern. I quess so much for protecting the youth. Speak up Rick this is where your leadership should be shining. Quit being like Obama and stand up and make decisions. Attack the problems and resolve them ASAP.

Have you ever heard of "Fair Use"? Councilman Holloway DID NOT violate any US copyright laws by disseminating copies of pages of questionable content. I did not violate US copyright law by posting the same material on the internet. The entire work was not copied, only the pages relevant to Holloway's discussion of the matter.
You must be the same imbecile who posted on the DT website.

Unfortunately, the county executive has no power over the WCBOE or their policies except for their budget. Granted, that is a hefty stick to swing, but Pollitt simply doesn't have the political will to swing it.
It's for the children don't you know.
Fredericksen does what the other higher ups at the Bd. do. He says whatever will please the person he who is complaining. It's called taking the easy way out. That happens with complaining parents who want policies ignored to favor their kids. Grades have even been changed if a parent is unhappy. Discipline penalties are reduced or eliminated to make a parent happy. Why anyone would want to be a principal trying to enforce the Bd. rules is beyond most of us. Even if the principal has made the perfectly right decision, someone complaining will always get his way.
