The Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Fredericksen made an executive decision to let the "star" football player for Parkside High School play in the game tonight, after the information about the child going home yesterday with a 103 degree fever and the POSSIBILITY of the H1N1, was released.
I believe the County rules for going home from school was not to return for a full 24 hours after the fever is gone, because the child is still ABSOLUTELY contagious!
Now from inside sources I understand that they are trying to say his fever is gone(yes, after taking half a bottle of Tylenol) I really would like to know why Dr. Fredericksen took it upon himself to RISK all the football players from BOTH SCHOOLS getting sick, so that one child can play. I thought this man was going to be good for the BOE, but apparently his decision making skills are a little off!
What parent in their right mind would want their SICK Child out playing football anyway? I just do not understand this whole situation, does anyone out there have any insight on this or why the BOE would risk spreading the H1N1 to all the Wicomico County students!

parkside has won only 1 game don't these people know this is only a game why put the kids at risk.If i was the other parents on both teams i would boycott. no way would i put my son's at risk no matter what.
What an idiot!! The parents are the ones who need to really be bashed over this one. HIS parents obviously decided that he was well enough to play. Plus if you have H1N1 you don't get over it that quickly. There's something else here. Keep digging Joe.

This can't be this serious, my son plays tonight and I think they(the school)would have sent a letter or something home! My son didn't even mention anything about this "star player". Get a grip people!!!!

Rules are rules. If there is a 24 hour rule, then they must abide by the rule.
Hey 4:32, you are the one who need to get a grip, if it is H1N1 everybody can get it, lots of people have died from this virus. So send your son to football, and hopefully later you arent crying that you sent him. good luck
If he is playing tonight - didn't we put everyone at risk? Doesn't that mean he was in school today alongside teachers, students, janitors, and administrators. Why is the ability of this student to play more important then the health of all the other people he must have come in contact with today? Really people, if you are sick STAY HOME!! No one is THAT important.
The BOE policy is a child with over 100 degree fever will be sent home and may not return until after the fever has been gone for 24 hours after the last dose of medication, Tylenol/Motrin. So if the child was sent home on Thursday he would have been told he would not be allowed to return to school on Friday. My child was sent home on a Tuesday and at that time was told she could not return on Wednesday and only on Thursday if the fever was gone for 24 hours after the last dose of medication.

Thanks for the policy update. However there is policy that the BOE abides by and policy that always seems to be a moving target. I'm guessing this one is a moving target. The lesson for today...do whatever you want; who cares if the whole world gets sick after you, you get to play football. YEAH TEAM! Quite a lesson for our little chick-a-dees.
The Board of Ed. is great at making rules and extremely poor at making people follow them. When the Bd. is asked to break one of its own rules, it does so almost 100% of the time. A parent appealing a suspension, a retention, even a letter grade, will be given what he or she wants. I'm a teacher and it makes me angry that kids whose parents follow the rules and policies never get special consideration, only the "rules don't apply to my child" parents get favors.
The policy is written. Anyone in the system could have explained it. Why was Dr. Fredericksen even involved in this? If the man can't even find the courage to enforce a printed rule, how much good is he in making decisions that require actual judgment? The Bd of Ed's motto should be, "If you don't want to follow a rule, we won't make you."
I'll bet this is the son of one of the assistant coaches. That sounds like something he would do.

I beleive that the Center for Disease Control made this initial recommendation to all school boards. Someone needs to report this to them.

I go to Parkisde and this so called "star player" is in my class, he left early about everyday this week and guess who his dad is! THE COACH
he is an idiot..thats why.. he cares NOTHING bout our kids. now why would he allow.. well people u do know that each child was charged a 4.oo charge to see the game. so when i droped my son off to see this GAME!!!lol.. it was packed. 4.00 cover is sopposed to be used for the field.. BOE will nickel and dime us to death to get what he wants. so by having the star football player there brings in more money... that field has been there forever. and i dont see what needs to be done. our tax dollars pay for the daily up keep.. so now we need to ask dear John..why a cover charge??? im sure he will have some sly comment on why.. he is a snake people..and u need to get into the schools and see how he is allowing our children to be treated. and the NEW bullying laws that have been placed. HAHAHAHAHA.. not working... so parents BEWARE!!!
I love all the speculation. First of all, the student was not a child of an assistant coach. Second--the child's fever was gone for 24 hours prior to returning. Third--the child is not the "star" of the team. There are no "stars" on the team--they are all team mates. Fourth--someone added the H1N1 crap to scare everyone. He was not suspected of having H1N1. It just amazes me how everyone just jumps to conclusions without facts.

I hold the BOE,the parents and the coaches all responsible! Gross negligence on all of them. They exposed everyone for their personal gain and satisfaction! Pretty disgusting! If the child's fever was gone for 24 hours and his parents were following the policy, why was the Superintendent involved? Dr. Fredericksen is not called for an opinion when people want to follow a rule. He is called when people want a special exception or favor.
Sorry, I failed to mention, the Gatorade incident involves another "star" player, along with yet another player, however the second player the only one reprimanded, as in kicked off the team and supended. The "star" player denied any involvement, even after 4 witnesses verified his involvement. Had this been ANYBODY else both players would have been equally punished for even the possibly association to the incident. Coaches need to read their own "Parkside Football Rules of Conduct"
Four witnesses should be enough!
